Love how he plays on the offensive blueline. Could be a really good prospect if he improves his skating a bit.

Rated as a late round talent as of not according to a mock draft site I just saw. Be interesting to see if his rating can improve.

Mock draft sites are generally terrible. Andrae is a top 3 round guy for sure. Skill level is very high end, I haven't seen a defenseman in this entire draft who is clearly better than Andrae on the offensive blue line. He is however small and his skating ability doesn't stand out.

I'd probably have him in the 2nd round right now. Really skilled but as the poster above pointed out, his size and skating ability means he has a long way to go to make the NHL.

Anyone has seen him play recently? Any update on his progression this year?

An undersized Swedish defenceman, Emil Andrae has put up 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points in 40 games playing for HV71’s team in the J20 Superelite league this season. It was the most points in the J20 league by a defenceman. He has also gotten his feet wet, playing 10 games in the SHL, but has yet to record a point in the men’s league. Emil also played two games with the J18, scoring four points, and one playoff game, scoring two points. Last season, Andrae scored 26 points in 28 games in the J18 league, as well as three points in five playoff games. He added seven points in 23 games in the J20.

Andrae has shown his skills on the international stage, scoring four points in five games at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup and picking up a bronze medal. Overall, he played 13 games for the Under-18 Swedish Team, picking up 12 points. He also picked up a bronze medal at last year’s Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, scoring three points in six games. Andrae was an alternate captain for the team as well. He played 17 total games for the Under-17 team scoring four goals and 10 points.

During the first pre-season game today he'll play alongside Strömberg(who was HV71's 4/5D last season) on a pairing that's reported as the second pairing.

Has been just insanely good in pre-season.

1g, 9a, 10p

in 7 games now vs mainly SHL teams.

Pushed himself up onto the top pairing and getting a lot of looks on PP1.

08/13: 1a, 1p
08/15: -
08/20: -
08/29: 3a, 3p
09/05: 1g, 3a, 4p
09/08: -
09/15: 2a, 2p

Is his pre-season so far.
Please select him Fitzgerald, even if it is the 20th pick (which is looking more likely now)

My dark horse to go high in the first round.

Can't teach that hockey sense and the offensive skill set in innate. He'll be a top 25 pick.

How is Andrae at:
handling a heavy forecheck?
running a breakout under pressure?
dealing with 200+ lb players?

He seems to have even better offensive presence than Sam Girard, another short D-man, but is he nearly that elusive? Is Torey Krug a good comparable?

He is good defensively. Pretty physical for a small guy too. He is broad and probably ends up close to 200lbs himself a la Kimmo Timonen.

Not as elusive as Girard. But agile at the blue-line and under pressure.

Needs to improve his stride still, but really not much else missing sans some power. A bit choppy at times after first step or two.

Andrae is not good defensively.

He makes poor decisions while defending the blue line and is over the top aggressive in his own end, which leads to more bad decsisions and poor positional play. He was on the ice for the 3rd most goals against in J20 SuperElit Top10, clearly most on his team despite playing two games less than most of his teammates. He also plays reckless with the puck in his own end, sometimes it works and he looks fantastic and other times he is a turnover machine which gets his team stuck in their own end.

It will be hard for him to improve his stride as the main issue it has is that it is is too short, which is almost fully tied to Andrae's legs not being very long.
