Cool. So, HC of a team, that is in the region, where ice-hockey is barely followed, had 5.5 millions.

Traditional hockey market team in hockey crazy country (Calgary) pay only 900 000 dollars. Strange.

Has a lot to do with experience. This is Geoff Ward's first NHL head coaching job. Joel Quenneville's experience and record is what earned him that pay day.

Are you for real? You do realize that Calgary's Geoff Ward is a rookie HC still? No team pay a rookie HC same salary as what Joel Quenneville makes, who has been HC since 1996 and is a proven winner...

Ward was also "promoted" to interim coach on old deal. There might be a clause that gives him a raise if promoted, and/or on having the interim tag removed he got a new contract.

Trotz had a automatic extension clause in contract if he won Stanley Cup, at a number well below value. (It was $1.8m, compared to Babcock's $8m with Toronto.)

(I don't know if team suggested possibility of negotiating a different/larger $$ contract or not, as a way of keeping him.)
