Captain America: The First Avenger - B

Continuing my MCU Rewatch:

I think I might have ranked CA: The First Avenger a little too highly on my first viewing. Originally I really liked this movie a lot and what it stood for. Here was a character who really wanted to do the right thing and fight for what he believes in but was deficient in achieving that until he was basically pumped full of Steroids. I liked the theme of being an American Symbol, but I forgot how corny Rogers was before he actually became Captain America.

Watching it again, there's a lot the movie gets right but there is also a lot of corniness to it as well. What it gets right is the setting, the character of Rogers as a symbol, Tommy Lee Jones as the Colonel, and I was really surprised at how much I liked Peggy Carter this time. Maybe it's the whole thing of we're in a world where Agent Carter was a TV show (Which I have never seen) and became pretty important to the MCU) but Atwell really played Agent Carter well. Also, this rewatch helped answer some questions I've had after watching the next few movies like learning more about Hydra, Bucky, and all that backstory

What I didn't like about the movie though was some of it was corny. I kinda wish Red Skull didn't reveal his real self because he became a bit of a cartoon character when he did. I love Hugo Weaving, and the villain should have been Hugo Weaving.

Overall, it was a decent film, but maybe I did rank it a little high.

Embrace of the Serpent: 6/10
I was a little surprised at the overwhelmingly positive reviews of this movie. It seemed up my alley but I expected to like it more than I did. It had kind of superficial Herzog quality to it, but rather than being mystical and subtle it was kind of heavy-handed and on the nose. The sound design and mixing was excellent, but I'm a little on the fence about the use of black and white. I don't know, the movie did look good too but at the same time I kind of question washing out the whole Amazon, I feel like something was lost. Overall I found it okay, I liked the idea of a character bridging two narratives and being told via the diary of the people involved but as a whole it just didn't resonate too much with me.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice: 5/10
This was not as downright bad as I expected it to be but it's still an extremely confused, holy mess of a film. In fact that's partly why it's so frustrating, because good ideas, scenes, dialogue, etc constantly rub up against bad ones. It has weird contradictory problems - it's very long and is constantly throwing plot exposition at you but at the same time it feels underdeveloped and half-baked. There is enough about Affleck's Batman that's different from Bale's so as to make him intriguing as a character, but not enough to make his motives throughout the movie feel believable. Jesse Eisenberg did the best he could, but his Lex Luthor was a boring cliché of a character from start to finish. On one hand, I liked the idea of Luthor pitting Superman against Batman, but I don't think it was executed terribly well. We're never given much of a reason to care about why this is happening, and the idea of two of the biggest superheroes in the world being manipulated and acting like children was more lame than anything. The battle scenes are great, although the final one with Doomsday which felt very messy.
That's kind of how the whole movie went for me - anything done well was almost immediately undone or at least marred by something else done poorly. It became very evident that the starting point for this project was "let's do Batman vs. Superman - anybody have any good ideas for that?" as opposed to "I have a good idea for doing Batman vs. Superman". Zack Snyder has to take it all on the chin for this failure but it's also evident that enough things went wrong to suggest this was the fault of the many.

Ex Machina: 8/10
I don't have too much to say except that it's a really good story, really well-acted that constantly keeps you guessing and has everyone's motives properly kept in the dark. A good soundtrack and fantastic location and set design. Very cleverly written and I enjoyed it well enough.

Keanu: 7/10
Thought it was okay, not as laugh out loud funny as I would have hoped for but there are some good lines. I thought it poked good fun at the gangster movie cliches, but despite that the structure of the movie felt heavily borrowed from the 21 Jump Street remake - a comedy about two guys in a "fish out of water" scenario, one of them gets somewhat pulled into the lifestyle, they have to prove they're legit, etc. There's even scenes in both of them where they're made to ingest the drug at the center of the narrative. And the semi-ironic love for a pop star (George Michael here) reminded me of the Backstreet Boys in This is the End, and I feel like there's another example of this that's eluding me at the moment. So not terribly original I don't think, but entertaining enough.

Went in not expecting much, but it was just so much less fun, less jokes, i dragged a bit, and an overdriven feminism statements throughout. There were a few good laughs, but a few too many misses too. Only recommend if it's on TV and nothing else on to meet your fancy.

Thor - B-

My rewatch of the MCU continues with the movie about a very muscular god and Marvel's best villain

I've always enjoyed Thor, even though it's admittedly near the bottom of my MCU rankings. The look of this film is really amazing, and the visual effects guys did a great job developing the alien world of Asgard and the ice world. While the other Marvel films felt more grounded to this point, this one felt like the Marvel films were really becoming a universe, only to be expanded more with Guardians of the Galaxy a few years later.

I also really liked the character relationships. We have Loki, who at this point is the best Marvel villain so far, the relationship between Thor his father, Jane, and of course, Loki.

However, what fails the movie is some of the bad humor of the human cast, as well as the action sequences. In a sense, this movie is kind of dull, at least duller than a lot of the other MCU films at this point. The action on Earth feels anti-climatic, and the scene between Thor and Loki at the end could have had a more emotional resonance.

The movie is decent, and there is a lot to like about this film, but it comes up a little bit short overall.

Chevalier (2016) Directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari 7B

Six men on a yacht in the Aegean sea decide to kill time by having a competition to see who among them is "the best of us." The winner will win a Chevalier signet ring as a token of his dominance. We receive virtually no back story about these men; we just get to know them as types. They put themselves through all kinds of various hoops, everything from constructing a CD shelf to measuring their penises. Then they vote on each other's performance once these various tasks have been completed. The movie has virtually no plot other than to watch the lengths to which these guys go to win this contest. Chevalier is a social comedy right out of the Yorgos Lanthimos Dogtooth school (Tsangari produced one of Lanthimos' later works, ALPS). In other words, the humour is subtle, resolute and comes way out of left field. A lot of people, especially men with thin skins, aren't going to find Chevalier as funny as it frequently is, and, true, the film does have a repetitive nature. However that repetition is justified by the clever ways in which Tsangari lampoons the male propensity to be vain, manipulative, insecure, and competitive, sometimes all at the same time. I thought the movie was a hoot, though most of the chuckles in the audience seemed to come from females. If you have a sense of humour about these things, Chevalier is really quite a brilliant trouncing of the male ego.

There have been a couple of reviews. Even though I liked it, and thought it was one of the better ones I saw last year, the consensus here is that the movie is, in the words of OzzyFan, "a tale of two halves." Most thought the first half, where it sets up the premise, is brilliant, while the last half got predictable and boring.

TMNT 2

A genuine 8/10.

I never saw the previous TMNT (the last one with Megan Fox) because it looked so dumb, but this one was getting lots of positive press, so I gave it a try.

It was tremendous! Good, stupid, light-hearted, action, fun!

Anybody who grew up on the old cartoon show and/or buying all the ridiculous toys should just adore this movie.

I liked it, too, and I didn't see a whole lot of drop between the first half and the second half, but that does seem to be the consensus around here.

This was honestly hard for me to rate. It was silly at times and over the top at times with it's jokes/writing, but it gave me a lot of giggles and smiles throughout along with a couple big laughs. Not everyone will like it, if you don't like Samberg's SNL stuff or Brooklyn Nine-Nine TV show or the Lonely Island comedy music, this isn't a movie for you. But I enjoyed most of it enough to recommend it to anyone who has a broad to gullible sense of humor, albeit moreso to rent one day, but if it's something you feel like it's up your alley or like Samberg's/SNL stuff, see it in the theater and it shouldn't disappoint.

Pretty much what nameless1 said. 1st half was great and had a ton going for it. 2nd half slowed down and had a lot less flow, less fun, less comedy, and less reflective thoughts to it. That said, I'd recommend it for the 1st half alone.

TMNT 2 : Out of the Shadows

Just awful.

I normally enjoy Turtle things to watch with my kid, but I would take watching any 3 random cartoon episodes in a row over this thing. Terrible "jokes", really irritating characters, managed to even make the Turtles unlikeable.

Best part of the movie is the credits, partly because it's over but because it has the classic Turtles song.

To sum up, my 3 year old son - I looked over and he literally facepalmed at the Turtles yelling out "Turtle Power" at the end. Like he was embarrassed for them. Highlight of the whole thing, never seen a child have that reaction to something before.

2/10

It is what it is. Its a buddy comedy and it fir the style perfectly. There were some moments I found pretty funny, I didn't think Robby D would do very good in this sort of role but he did alright. I think his old-style persona from Goodfellas & Casino kicked in a bit. He and Efron seemed to be solid together although the ending was complete **** and easily predictable by the middle of the film.

I had read some reviews on Rotten Tomatoes beforehand and they blasted it, I thought it was better than most. Still weird seeing De Niro in this type of movie but hey why not try new things in your 70s ;)

Mostly a factor of the time of year. With some very scattered exceptions, things don't usually perk up until September. Though I've rated some other movies as very good this year, if I don't feel that they have at least an outside shot at making my top twenty by the end of the year, they don't make the "best of '16 so far" list.

Sad to see Russel Crowe let himself go like that though.

I'm actually amazed how horrible this movie is. Like if you didn't know better you'd think it was a direct to dvd movie. Easily the worst dialogue I've ever seen in a movie.

Or I take that back, a close second to mortal kombat

Edit:

I would bet a million dollars the people that wrote this movie never even read the book or saw any of the movies. They shoehorn "it's alive" multiple times in the movie like its a subtle wink

Guardians of the Galaxy - 2/10, pretty much unwatchable but forced myself to anyways.

The Crying Game - 8/10, strange, good movie. Jaye Davidson was amazing. Recommend, although most certainly not for everyone.

Rachel Getting Married - 8.1/10, depressing as **** but very good. Some of the scenes were a bit overzealous (in terms of length and extended shots) but they did it to really hammer the realism of it all home, so I understand. Simple but touching movie.

The Mexican - 7.3/10, Gandolfini was awesome.

Good story, good acting for the most part, but WHY must they use such cheesy CGI for spiderman? When he's flying around in the sky it is not even close to looking real, pulls me out of an otherwise decent story every time. Might has well have been claymation for some of the action scenes.

Mad Max: Fury Road.

Just gets more awesome every time I watch it.

But I am noticing more discrepancies. Max, Furiosa and company turn around, and decide to head back to the Citadel. Did they just take a shortcut around the huge mud flat that bogged everyone down and allowed Max to take out the Bullet Farmer?

And they pulled down the last tree in the outback getting the war rig free from it; Nux lived in the Citadel where there were trees and limited greenery. He'd know what they were, right?
