Aw man they must’ve been having an off night. I seen July Talk four times and also know them personally and they’ve always put on a killer show when I went.

I did think pairing them up with Metric was a questionable call though, they thrive more in intimate venues.

I saw July Talk a couple years ago at Ottawa's Dragon Boat Festival and they put on a good show.

Last week:

Killswitch Engage/Parkway Drive 10/10

Slayer/Lamb of God/Amon Amarth/Cannibal Corpse 10/10

Had seats for the Slayer show (pit last year or year before, and over a dozen other times in previous years) so I was a little more relaxed than I'd usually be, but besides that it was great as always. I think they played 20 songs and was hyped to hear Payback. Definitely surprised they didn't have the Hanneman backdrop as they have since he died.

Alvvays--CBC Music Festival, Echo Beach, Toronto--10/10

I just love Alvvays. The band's members seem somehow pleasantly homespun and unpretentious, and they certainly had a fine night tonight.

Brian Ferry, Sony Centre for the Arts, Toronto 10/10

This was probably the last go-round for the former Roxy Music frontman. His voice is an amazing instrument if not quite what it once was, but no complaints there. Ferry still makes some of the most stylish and sophisticated mid-tempo rock music around, and he and his band--which included Chris Spedding on lead guitar, no less--were in excellent form last night.

Greg Kihn (6.0/10)-Played the hits. Used Rick Springfield's band.
Starship (6.5/10)-Played the hits. 50 years since Woodstock although I'm sure there's no original members left from Jefferson Airplane.
Rick Springfield (9.0/10)-This guy always puts on a superior show.

Heavy Montreal festival last weekend. This is my favorite festival to attend and I go every year. Once again a solid 10/10

Best shows of the two days were Ghost, Slayer, Anthrax, Hatebreed, Kataklysm, Steel Panther and In This Moment.

Jeff Lynne's ELO - PPG Paints arena 10/10

Great show, Lynne was the only original from ELO but the band was spot on, played all the favorites, nice touch to bring opening act Dhani Harrison on stage to sing his dad's parts on the Traveling Wilburys Handle with care

An evening of experimental rock music, most of which worked. The music was given a big assist by one of the most artful light shows that I have ever seen.

Trollband, 7/10 opened for Metsatoll, 9/10 who were the supporting act for Arkona 7.5/10.

An evening of folk metal from Edmonton, Estonia and Russia respectively. Metsatoll was the band my wife and I were there to see; we saw them a few years ago when they were touring with Finntroll. Best of the night, if you ask me. Arkona took a while to get going imho, and a lot of their stuff is more straight-ahead metal with some folky flute stuff stuck on top, whereas Metsatoll has pipes, flute, traditional instruments and medieval chord progressions in much more of a featured role. They kicked ass. Would've hopped in the mosh pit for a bit, but I'm only a couple of weeks away from hernia surgery so I couldn't. Also I probably would've spilled my beer. Also also, why is it the most enormous guys have to get in there? I mean, I'm 6', just under 200 lbs (of mostly muscle, though as I age increasingly more is flab, I admit) and I was utterly dwarfed by half the guys in the pit. Not often I feel really small, but I did then.

Still a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
