Assuming Vegas doesn't win one of the three draft lotteries, would there be a deal to be had based around 4th / 5th / 6th overall and Gabriel Landeskog?

I know Avs want a blue chip D prospect... they could draft one with the pick, or trade the pick to acquire one.

Vegas will have a roster of players by the time the entry draft happens, and would probably be willing to add to get a player of Landeskog's age, talent and leadership. First captain of Vegas?

LANDESKOG
(2nd piece - maybe?)
(cap dump - maybe?)

for

4th/5th/6th Overall
(forward)
(defenseman)

One idea that came to mind for example is...

Gabriel Landeskog
Beauchemin (cap dump)
Mikhail Grigorenko

for

6th Overall
Colin Wilson
Scandella / Brodin

What do you think? Can it work? Can it be modified to make it work?

Here are some players that Vegas will possibly have on their roster. You can't have a FWD and D from.the same team, because Vegas can only draft one per team (example Jokinen + Pysyk).

FORWARDS
Jussi Jokinen
Brandon Pirri
Carl Hagelin
Colin Wilson / Victor Arvidsson

DEFENSEMEN
Dion Phaneuf
Jack Johnson
Mark Pysyk
Slater Koekkoek / Ondrej Sustr
Ryan Pulock / Calvin De Haan
Justin Schultz / Derrick Pouliot
Trevor Van Riemsdyk
Patrik Nemeth / Esa Lindell
Matt Dumba
Paul Martin
...and/or possibly (maybe not)...
Alex Petrovic
Braydon Coburn
Dan Hamhuis / Stephen Johns
Marco Scandella / Jonas Brodin
Tobias Enstrom / Tyler Myers

I would be hesitant to give up a top 5 pick by itself. No way am I attaching a top 4 dman and a top 6 forward. This team isn't going to be in a position to compete at any time during Landeskog's current contract. They need to take the BPA with their 1st and build around that player.

landeskog + meh 3rd line foward and negative contract for high pick + 2nd line foward + top 4 defenseman

Sure that's fair value

Now this is starting to get more creative. Props to the poster on this one.You have given it some serious thought and I like how you incorporated the Vegas Knights here. Would a brand new team be interested in a player like Landeskog and potentially Grigs? Absolutly! Would they be willing to trade in their first ever draft pick in franchise history for those players?

That I think is where it gets a bit more complicated.. As far as the Avalanche are concerned It would really depend on what the vegas team even looks like at that point. (Does someone know if the expansion draft will happen before or after the entry draft?) I cant remember off the top of my head here..

This draft isn't good enough, nor would a quality enough of a player fall to LV for them to be able to get Gabe.

If you could get Gabe for depth guys and a solid prospect then he would have been moved by now.

Foley has been talking about free agency not trades. I doubt they make trades for top NHL players at the entry draft.

Thats horrible for Las Vegas. A very good defensemen and a top pick for Landeskog. Makes no sense for them

If Vegas offered less, or if Colorado added, does anybody think it could work? Especially if it's 6th overall. It's less "shiny" than a top 5 pick, for lack of a better word, and the optics of trading it away (in the press) would be more favorable.

What this thread has taught me so far - Vegas (pobably) has the right pieces to get Colorado to say yes to a Landeskog deal, if that's what Vegas really wanted to do. Might have to overpay, might not, but it's within the realm of possibility.

I agree.

I HIGHLY doubt Vegas trades their 1st ever draft pick (unless it's for a higher pick)

This. The optics are bad if nothing else. The only way it would work, IMO, from a publicity/marketing POV is if it were for a top player like Matthews but then the other team would never agree.

That aside, I think OP's proposal favors CO.

Even if we did acquire, say, 5th overall, there simply are not any defensemen in this draft that meet our requirements for what we want out of a Landeskog trade, so the draft pick is basically us getting back another forward or a #3 offensive D (who still needs to develop) Now, if this were a year in the future and we had a shot at Dahlin or McIsaac with that pick, yeah, let's sit down and give it some thought. But not in this draft class.

There are tons of Dman who meet that requirement.

unless mcphee is being bribed by colorado, dont see this happening.
Landeskog probably doesnt return a top 5 pick at this point, let alone throwing in a top 4 dman and top 6 forward while taking back a dump.

if the golden nights get a guy like brodin/dumba, there is the centrepiece for a landeskog deal. maybe toss in a 2nd as well

I thought they could draft no later than 4th OA. They start with the same lottery % as the team finishing 28th, but I thought no matter what they can't pick lower than 4th based on Bettman's stipulation. Maybe I misunderstood?

At any rate, even though the draft isn't a strong one, I can't imagine Vegas trading its inaugural pick. Whether the player becomes a star or not, he will be the face of the franchise initially.

I think the OP's idea is fine and worth debating, but I'd say there's less than a 1% chance they trade the pick.

If I was Vegas, I'd try to do a double draft pick swap with this years 1st OA. They are guaranteed lottery even if they win the Cup in 2017/2018, so it is a good trade for whatever team takes it on (likely Colorado) but it gives Vegas an elite potential center in Nolan Patrick. Take on a cap dump to round out the deal.

Then make some moves such as:

Montreal: Scandella or Dumba and TVD

Vegas: 2018 1st + Hudon

Detroit: 50% Retained Phaneuf, 2017 3rd, 2018 4th

Vegas: Mantha

Islanders: 2017 2nd

Vegas: Ho-Sang.

Vegas ends up leaving with: Nolan Patrick, their 2017 1st rounder, Montreal's 1st Rounder in 2018, Hudon, Mantha and Ho-Sang.

They end up leaving their 2018 1st, and 4th, Scandella or Dumba + TVD, Phaneuf, as well as their 2017 2nd and 3rd behind.

Detroit gets a very needed LD veteran to help anchor them. Montreal gets the defensive pieces to justify moving Sergachev + 2017 1st for Duchene now, Avalanche get a good draft pick but otherwise a lateral move, and the Islanders get rid of a 'problem child'.

There are tons of Dman who meet that requirement.

Liljegren is the only defenseman in the draft with a reasonable shot at being a top pair guy, and he's also an offensive specialist, which we don't need. I also don't see true #1 potential in him. He looks to be a poor man's Karlsson, who I'm not even a big fan of as a #1D. His most likely final outcome is a 2/3 guy who produces a lot of offense, which isn't what the Avs want at the price of Landeskog/Duchene. Could we draft him? Sure, he'd replace Barrie in a few years. But trading Landeskog for an extra pick so we could get him just seems pointless when he doesn't fit the dire need we have for defensive defensemen.
