When people talk about 7×8 being too much, you’re talking about realistic projected player value. That makes sense from the perspective of a fan and a team. But if the player is a UFA, their value is set by the stupidity of other GMs and the supply or lack of supply of alternatives. In this case Blake Coleman he’s going to get five or 6 million and there is no one on the market who can replace what Landeskog brings. You have to suck it up and pay your core guys, And find better value on your depth than we were getting from JT Compher, or in the playoffs from Donskoi as well. Thats why Coleman and Goodrow were worth so much to Tampa, they were cheap for 3 years on the 3rd line
Yup. I'd much rather overpay Mack, Makar, Mikko, or Landy than JTC, Cole, Calvert, etc. At least those guys are bringing something that is basically irreplaceable unlike JTC who can re replaced for 3/4 the value.

This... once you contend, don't overpay for depth. It might cost big future assets, but you can get bottom 6 and 4-6 D on cheap contracts to fill out a roster.

That's why its important to draft well so you have these depth guys on cheaper contracts during their prime years before they hit UFA.

Or have draft capital to trade for them. Getting those Bonino and Cullen types before they cost 4M a year is almost as important.

Hyman 7 years and 5,5 mil. Just shows how ridiculous the market is. We are lucky to have Landy at this price. He left a lot of money on table, at least per year.

The eight years will almost assuredly become a problem at some point, but after seeing what Hyman and Coleman will likely get I have less and less problem with the AAV even at max term.

Shit, those last 2 years at 5.5 should be no problem to live with if his body declines by then.

Sure, the cash is $5.5M. But the cap hit is still $7M. that means 2 things:

1) The Avs are losing an opportunity to sign a decent 3rd liner for $1.5 (or use an ELC)
2) Any team to which the Avs wish to trade him will need $7M of cap space, not $5.5M

There is also 2a) Landy will be a third liner by the last two years of the contract. The 2 Left Wings in front of him will want to get paid market value. How do the Avs do that with a $7M AAV as 3LW?

Have you seen the contract for the decent 3rd liners? Way more than 1.5mil lol.
