Tortorella is too much of a dinosaur.

You put Laine on the powerplay as much as possible, keep him away from strong defensive forwards, and load up a second line with him on it that you can take advantage of a weaker forward group. Tell him to play to his strength, shoot the puck as much as possible if open, and don't rely on your speed, back checking or passing because they aren't your best strengths. Obviously you don't want him to be completely lazy and be a turn over machine. But if you can turn him into a consistent 40 goal scorer then the weaknesses in his game won't be as difficult to deal with.

Torts thinks you can turn a scorer into a Selke candidate. Torts is not Bowman and Laine is not Yzerman, its not going to work. Just score goals.

You're a dinosaur if you actually have think that's how he coaches, please get with the times.

Demanding accountability =/= "everyone must be a Selke candidate" he's literally asking for bare minimum of what any respectable player should do.

Maybe as a coach you just have to accept some defensive lapses/laziness from Laine.

The Jets have had winning records with him on the roster before so it's not like it's impossible.

A 6'5 Phil Kessel with worse attitude issues, no cup, consistency and cement boots for feet.

Even still - expected him to be giving teams fits on the PP well into his mid 30s

Have you watched the games? Laine is getting tons of opportunity despite having major defensive lapses. Do you think he's not getting top minutes or PP time or something?

People spouting about Torts like they think Laine is playing 10mins a night on the 4th line cause Torts doesn't like him when he's been given the green light most of the season and is a -25 as a result.

The Jets also have better players than Laine who shelter him from being exposed like he is now which is why they have a winning record without him too...

There's going to be a lot of silly-looking people in this thread in a few years. Laine has a ton of skill and he's not a one-trick pony as some people still seem to think. I would absolutely take him back on the Jets if we could manage the cap space, but I'm pretty sure that bridge is burned pretty nicely. The next team he goes to is going to be pretty happy they "took a chance" on him.

How many minutes does he play in the end of the game? If over 15, it’s more than plenty considering that he’s spending a lot of time on powerplay.

Cam Atkinson scored 40 goals two years ago.

Anderson and Bjorkstrand all have multiple 20 goal seasons and near 30 goal seasons with the team

Ryan Johansen scored 30 and 27 here

Werenski led defenseman in goals last year and is near the top since he’s been in the league

Etc

but yeah, you’re right

Who knows, maybe he's easing in after he was sick the other day - also that lineup looks abysmal
I consider Torts to be a significantly better coach than Maurice so hopefully his strategies will work (whereas Maurice just left Laine to meander on the 2nd line)
