Greatly appreciated!

My wife and I had a great time in those areas but as a hockey fan I think you would love the small museum in Windsor NS, I had no idea it was even there and when I found it what it was we had to go! But tons of old forts and history in the maritimes, all pretty easily accessible for a driving holiday!

When has this ever happened?
Hitch played everyone and their brothers over Ian Cole. He also ran TJ Oshie out of STL and pretty much alienated everyone in the locker room by bringing in old stale vets from Dallas, Has never been like Michalek from AZ. The guy is known for and I quote " playing for the zero ". While doing so he stymies any offensive game. You'll see.

What would be the top 5 places to visit in Canada if you are a history enthusiast?
Serious question.

My wife and are planning to go within a year or so (I am trying to align any visit with Oilers games...) and we both love history. Nature as well but that seems to be easier, Canada seems to be full of beautiful nature.

Should be a separate thread but if the mods are cool with it I'll respond here but also open to it being moved to a visitor type thread which is appropriate here.

I can't really limit it to 5.

But top recommendations would be Quebec City, Old City Montreal, Winnipeg. Halifax. Victoria. As cities that's the list I would give. But even Edmonton has the splendid Fort Edmonton historic complex (several eras preserved in a huge park area.) Calgary has Heritage Park which is same Idea. I'd recommend as well seeing as many of the original train Hotels as well. They are dotted across the country, Banff Springs Hotel, Frontenac Hotel in Quebec City, Laurier in Ottawa among the best. York Hotel in Toronto and Empress hotel in Victoria certainly get a mention.

If you go to Vancouver stay at the sleepy little "Sylvia Hotel" A historic property with unbridled charm. In a great location on English bay. It used to be the ONLY building located right there..

In Toronto we've been lucky enough to spend weeks in the quaint "Selby hotel" The wartime abode of the famous Ernest Hemingway. Complete with their preserved Hemingway suite. I'm a huge fan so it was pretty amazing.

Being a history buff I like the fur Trade history, the Forts, the passages, portages and such and at Winnipeg, Fort Garry, Fort Edmonton, Jasper, Banff, and lower mainland BC I like to envision the fur trade routes whenever I travel through the regions. Best way to see Canada, if one has the time, is by train, or at least a portion thereof. Taking the affordable Via Rail from Edmonton through Rockies to Vancouver is pretty much a must and the one way trip takes 24hrs, very affordable. Its the best way because of course it largely follows valleys, it still travels much of the original passes and train routes. Its wonderful. Its our own Orient express. Comes right through Edmonton.

As a hiker I've also been on a fair number of historic pass routes. That's a whole other topic.

Hey, if you ever want to drop me a line for more information or anything let me know. I have kind of a passion in recommending Canadian tourism. Such a big country though and so much to see. You really have to pick what to prioritize. For me you can't miss the rockies, specifically Banff and Jasper National Parks. That should be part of any trip to Canada and most visitors agree.

Quebec City, PEI, Halifax and area, Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Annapolis Royal. Oh and Windsor NS, the birthplace of hockey!

Just out of clarity in PEI I would say Charlottetown, and not the American missive "In search of anything Anne of Green gables"... I should have mentioned Charlottetown. just for its preserved history and role in confederation.

Back to the game. The play of the game. Forbort, the kings 5/6 D, making a letter perfect board pass to Anze Kopitar springing him for the biggest goal. The Reason the Kings won the game.

This is a depth Kings D making a play we don't have anywhere in our lineup. Now think about the Kings having Doughty, Muzzin, Phaneuf, Martinex above this guy. Kings also have Fantenberg, Ladue. Kings so deep on D they lost Voynov, McNabb, Gravel, etc and still have this depth on D.

Theres something in the Kings model of acquiring and developing D we should be following if I knew what that was, other than them really taking time developing them and finding them.

The documentary went into that. Several diseases/epidemic on board as well. Some died on board, more afterwards. Basically everybody got off the boat feeling half dead and starving. Rations went long before the ship arrived and many survived at all on one wealthy passengers horde of partially moldy oatmeal biscuits. The people were so hungry they would eat rats, if any were found on board.

The ship also arrived late in fall. So no food, no ability to grow any until the next year, no provision, no shelter. Get off boat starving and then have to learn how to hunt and scavenge something while having the energy left to fell and drag and cut timbers to make winter shelter. Many would have starved outright without help from Micmacs and others who were later killed.

The MicMac have a reservation across the harbour from Pictou. Things are getting heated around here now. We have a pulp mill that has been here since 1967. They need a new plan for their effluent . They want to pipe it out into the ocean treated. The fisherman ( natives and non natives) are not up for that. Mill owner basically said No pipe, no mill. The ponds for the effluent must be closed by 2020. I can see some fighting happening

I live in NS and just went to Louisbourg last year. Pretty amazing I must say. It was originally built in the 1700’s to counter Halifax. When you go there, the people employed there play the rolls of the 1700’s. they fire the canon everyday. While in Cape Breton, travel the Cabot Trail. I’ve driven across Canada 3 times and Cabot to me is the best. Halifax is quite a city as well . You would really like the waterfront . I’ve been all thru NFLD, except Gros Morne National Park. I hear it’s beautiful. PEI is nice. It’s basically a beach with golf courses everywhere .
If you are coming to Atlantic Canada, I suggest July, August, September. Weather is great then.

U can drive thru Atlantic Canada pretty easily. There are ferries in Pictou going to PEI, Digby to Saint John, North Sydney to NFLD, Yarmouth to Portland , Maine as well as the bridge across to PEI

What would it take to get Martinez? I like him as a Dman. Not sure on his cap hit but if LA stays at bottom, they will be looking to offload. I didn’t like Toffoli last night but he is pretty good as well

Amen. I've felt that since I was a kid here. I remember my parents telling me to look at this or that (several buildings which I could list still today) telling me I was seeing it for the last time. Couldn't understand a City that kills its historic heart like that then, can understand it even less now. Still happening too.

But even with Rexall, I've lamented many of times here that the history of this org, that anybody would want to remember, is there, not at Rogers Place, and so of course the COE can't wait to dynamite the place..

I don't get it.

Can't stand it. All my life been like that here. I'll go a step further as I know you know this too.
The old Edmonton Garden was a gem. Natural ice and all. Loved it!!

So this is basically, the same team that went 7 and 2, against some of the best teams in the league...
Now we get run out of the rink, by the worst team in the league...

What changed....

Seriously it just felt like a good time to go off topic and seeing as some of you were already touching in history I went for it.

I might drop you a line when we get closer. Probably (hopefully) summer/autumn next year.

I was in nova Scotia in the spring for the first time We were in Bridgeport .

What a beautiful province. Peggy's cove, Lunenburg, Halifax harbour etc. So much beauty and history. Halifax by far the nicest harbour I have ever seen.

Ahhh, the Edmonton Gardens. The original home of the Edmonton Flyers, Oil Kings and WHA Oilers. With free air conditioning through gaps in the brickwork. ;)

Loved the old place, I've talked about it a lot in here. Only thing I didn't like is smoking was allowed indoors back then. That was the smokiest goldarn place I've ever been inside of. You went in there a s kid, and you felt like you WERE smoking.

Bridgeport is in the valley. Pretty small town. There is a picture of Halifax during war years. It looks like u could walk across the harbour on the ships . It was very busy spot . Lunenburg is very nice as well. Did u see the old school on the hill?

This team has an easier time getting up for what it considers premium clubs. This is habit learnd and from even before the McD era. Problem is some other clubs have the same idea. Kings and Ducks love to bust Oilrs balls and take it as a personal mission each time they play us. This was probably one of the Kings better played games this season. Better clubs take us lightly, don't give their best efforts.

The other thing is divisional clubs have all faced us, scouted us, know how to play us, they have adapted. The Oilers rarely do well against clubs that execute an actual plan playing us. We do well against clubs that approach the games in casual fashion. The latter games mean nothing, are not indicative. Its only when you get into dogfight divisional 4 pt matchups that you have any idea what kind of club you have. That's why this last 5 games is being so revealing. We're failing this divisional test immensely. We're falling further behind, when some thought we would be making ground.

We did. What awestruck me the most was the memorial in Lunenburg by the bluenose which identified all of the sailors lost at sea. There were hundreds.... Maybe a thousand! Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. There is so much history. We seen gravestones from the 1700's. Truly where our history as a nation begins. Citadel Hill was pretty cool as well...

Louisbourg is wonderful, probably my favourite historical sites in Canada. Went to NS & PEI when I was a kid, absolutely loved Nova Scotia and would definitely like to go back one day. Not a big fan of CFL but would love to see them get the team. They are always really supportive of sporting events and could see it doing very well there.

Forgot about the Citadel! That was awesome too. Always been a big history buff (Social Studies was my best class in school and did an undergrad focusing on the social sciences) so seeing the Citadel and Louisbourg were really inspiring as a kid.

Ha!
Yeah I grew up as youngest of 7 whom all smoked at that time!!
I was young but will never forget the feeling of skating on that ice.
Same as N Coliseum. Season tickets for glory years - and I also remember the smoking in there!! Couldn't in your seat but on the concourse by concessions everyone would puff away!! Between periods it's amazing you could even see!!
