Hopefully not get injured. Seems like the guy has been battling some sort of injury ever since we got him.

I think a lot of these guys as their bodies grow in their late teens really early 20's they can get easily injured and as they get older their bodies mature and end up being okay. Let's hope that's the case for Saarela

Kind of like Williams....he had a flurry of injuries and after he left us he played like 80 games a season the next 6 years

Not sure if this is a bad thing or a blessing in disguise. He has been bad this season and has spent more time in the sand than David Hasselhoff when on the golf course.

really interesting they went with Saarela. I think this move might correspond with sending PDG back to Charlotte once Wallmark is healthy. it may be that they seek the addition of more a pure shooter and a player with more natural scoring ability. i already talked about the sog stat as it relates to Zykov, but Saarela has 29 shots in his last 7 games and 5 goals. Zykov has 7 in his last 7 with only 13 shots. could be a sign of what bpeto is asking out of his forwards.

When choosing the player whom to call up from the A, especially to bottom 6 duties, do they necessarily bring up the prospect that is "best" and/or "most fitting"?

Or can it be that there are open questions about that particular player and his NHL compatibility that they wish to have answered at this point of his development, which questions they feel have been comfortably enough answered already on the other prospects who could've otherwise been called up before him?

Obviously in this case they are looking to stock up his trade value for the Tavares trade at the deadline. Now that bad weather Necas is in the organization, it's only sensible to send "Islander" to his own, to not anger the hockey gods.

i see your point for sure, and in past years certainly more pertinent was the question about meritorious call up vs. why the hell not. in the midst of some really valuable games on the schedule and the organization feeling the heat so much they sent out an email bragging that the team was currently in wild card contention, this feels more to me like Wallmark is going to take the 4th line center assignment and Saarela might find his way onto the wing with guys that are expected to score. sometimes it feels like teams call up guys that they're trying to catch at peak confidence based on their play and not just go down the stat sheet and see who has the counting stats to come up. probably a lot of discussion with the checkers bench boss about who was really going and what the pro team felt was missing. natural scoring touch and the ability to convert is right up there among our most glaring needs.

A point on Saarela's ELC:

Aleksi Saarela - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

The structure of his contract is such that it looks* that the Performance Bonus ($207.500) he has for this season is a CBA 9.7 "Games Played" one: if he plays either 10 or "more than 10" games, he's in for a payday. Having signed his ELC at 19, he wouldn't be eligible for another Slide year in any case so a year will burn whether or not he stays up, but in money terms, keeping him up for say 13 games is expensive in money terms.

(* Performance Bonus + Base Salary + Signing Bonus comes up to the max allowed $925k every year** but the PB goes down as BS grows in accordance. Games Played bonuses count against the $925k.)

(** Or at least would have, if he hadn't got the first Signing Bonus for the Slide year and thusly not getting another one for year four)

Zykov actually has similar ELC structure with GP bonus of $147.500 for this year that is the last in his ELC. Are they maybe keeping his price down for the RFA negotiation purposes by not bringing up at this point and lit it up?

Who are the other potential guys, and what's their contract situation?
