As for the reaction of some of the fans in our thread I'm sorry about that. It was as uncalled for and ignorant as the original article but it doesn't represent the majority of us.
No need to apologize for a few idiots. We all have a few of those in our fan base. I think one of our posters Mr Jiggyfly said your fans are a cool group for the most part. He would know.
Don't worry,Toronto has its fair share of "journalists" .... and dumb fans

Good luck tonight

Agreed.

Good luck tonight. Hoping for a good game.

It's mostly a personal pet peeve since Pittsburgh hasn't been an industrial wasteland in a long time. Steel mills moved out and high tech & hospitals moved in.

That said, taking this article seriously and using it to bash the Pens fan base would be like Leafs fans being held accountable for everything Damien Cox writes. It's homer rah-rah garbage written to make the fans give themselves a pat on the back for how great we are. In reality it's had the complete opposite effect - Pens fans have been laying into Dejan on twitter all morning.

Oh god you have my sincerest apologies that you even know who Damien Cox is

Haha, it's all in good fun though; you guys are my second favourite team and I'm always pulling Pens in the playoffs

Dejan isn't so bad, it's just a fluff piece. They all do it, and every time HF takes to the streets. It's just the way it is. It was either this or an interview with a random player full of softball questions.

He could have focused on how much hockey has grown in Pgh, expanded on how the city has better local TV ratings than any American based team, or even NBA team, etc. That in of itself is mind boggling. Talked about how the ratings were still off the charts when both Crosby and Malkin were hurt two seasons ago, etc.

With the backdrop of a region that has churned out as many NFLers as the GTA has NHLers, and the deeply rooted love for football in Western Pa where the sport is like a religion, where things are going with hockey is incredible and encouraging.

Tons of Leaf fans would be thrilled to know our city is getting as passionate as them about hockey. However, DK didn't need to put down Toronto to build up Pgh.

As I thought, there's a thread going on the Leafs board and it's all "they almost moved" etc. One even called Pittsburgh an "industrial wasteland." Oookay.

Never mind the fact that the biggest **** Dejan is getting over that article is from Pens fans.

They really are completely clueless about the Pens' financial situation back in the early 2000's.

The yinzer parallels are undeniable.

Good thing all those Indian Casinos saved us.

Indian Casinos during the Lemieux era, no less. Pfft, if that were the case, Jagr would've never left.

If they'd have ended the posts with "I'll hang up an' lissin tah yer comments" I would've thought I was reading a transcript of a call in to a local sports radio show.

The penguins don't come close to the tradition and passion that the Leafs have but I think he's saying that when the average fan thinks of the NHL, they think of the Penguins, Crosby, Malkin, and such before most other teams and players due to Pittsburghs recent success as well as Torontos lack of... I see what he was saying, but still his article came off smug and basically dumb.

The team is the source of many jokes, but the fans shouldn't. Toronto is, and will always be, the hockey mecca.

Well, I think we've gotten our avatar theme for the playoffs (hockey mecca...kinda goes with that thread a year or so ago comparing the Pens and Detroit that said the Pens were the "kings of the NHL" or something) :sarcasm:

Oh God no.

The main board will take it seriously.

And why are we bumping this thread to give him more notice than he deserves?

Oh damn I just did it too.

And now he is being interviewed on NHL live, because of that article. He got what he wanted. Attention.

Dejan was a good journalist when he originally covered the Pens before the 2004 lockout, but now he's pretty much a younger Smizek. Goes out of his way to rip the Pirates (they deserve it, but he literally never passes up a chance to slam them) and out of touch (see todays article).

I'm all for bagging on Toronto or any other Original 6 team, but this article clearly was written for effect. Pittsburgh does have a rich hockey history dating back to the 1890s, that would have been nice for Dejan to actually put some of that in there. No one is questioning Toronto's passion for the Leafs, but many have questioned whether they are a hockey town or a Leafs town.....

I'm officially calling Penguins fans the most humble/respectful fans in hockey. I am amazed at how 99% of everyone here is looking at this article without their homer googles on.

If this was in any other city people would be trashing the Leafs all day. Good luck tonight.
