I missed that CSKA extended the contract with 19-year-old goalkeeper Vsevolod Skotnikov until 2024. Is this the next Sorokin?

To be honest, other than a couple of good games Berdin has been very so-so. Not yet the guy who moves the needle much at the KHL level.

Anyone know why it looks like kravtsov didnt play for traktor yesterday?
Per Gillian Kemmerer, apparently has a lower body injury.

I watched his last game played. Caught a high stick, but played in the last minute of the game with no difficulty.

He has been out since; dressing 11F & 8 D until today, when they dressed a 5’9”, 143lb 18yr old F in Artem Shvaryov.

Berdin has been playing very well, hopefully he can earn a serious look with the Jets for a backup role.
He is not playing well at all. The quarantine forced SKA's hand, so he was getting more opportunities than he would normally get given his shaky play.

It's all about size here. He is probably the next best prospect after Askarov(by a margin, but still) in this class. He wasn't drafted because he is under 6'1''. 6'1'' is what every goalie in the draft was at least except for one canadian kid. Instead two 6'8'' guys were drafted who will probably never reach the level. Right now he is not Sorokin caliber, but he very well might be CSKA's starter of the future in a couple of years.

SKA, CSKA - (Central) Army Sports' Club;
Ak Bars, Barys - Snow Leopard;
Jokerit - Jester;
Neftekhimik - Petroleum Chemist;
Severstal - North Steel;
Vityaz - Knight.

Spartak, Sibir, Traktor, Torpedo, Salavat Yulaev, Metallurg, Lokomotiv, Dinamo, Sochi, Avangard, Amur, Avtomobilist - don't really require translation, names of people/locations/international words.

Pretty much it. Most names come from the Soviet sports' system where sports clubs belonged to/were administered by worker unions of factories/institutions with a rather obvious indication to a certain profession or factory.

In addition to @SoundAndFury 's post.

Turkic poeples have a soft spot for snow leopards. It is in the coat of arms of Tatarstan. The word "bars" for it being adopted into Russian from turkic languages.

Neftekhimik due to Nizhnekamsk being built around the huge petroleum-processing conglomerate now owned by "Nizhnekamsk-Neftekhim" a chemical industry giant and the hockey team's main sponsor and still the heart of the city. Fun fact: AkBars is sponsored by "Tatneft" and Tatarstan's governor was part of the director's board in the past. Kazan's mayor though is from Nizhnekamsk and a hockey fan(even played for Nizhnekamsk youth team back in the day). There is your rivalry and controversy right there.:) Although Tatarstan is one of the best regions of Russia at sports development and while Neftekhimik is still to become a real threat they aren't really treated like they are the broke relatives noone is happy to have. They do get a lot of support. Also among Tatarstan fans there is no rivalry at all except for the actual games against eachother. The "Tataneft-Arena" always cheers when they show other games' scores and we see that Neftekhimik is winning. AkBars though is defnitely the one team Russia's Tatars cheer for first. There are a lot of AkBars fans in regions other than Tatarstan. Where they definitely have beaten us already is youth development. You have to give them that. Yak failed, but was still a 1OA and Sergachyov is now a SC Champ. AkBars has a good school, but we "only" have Svechnikov to show for it and he is no Kazan native. Just an import to our school.

Cherepovets is an old steeler city. Severstal is sponsored by the company of the same name.

Spartak is the name of the few soviet sport societies as they were called. Country wide affiliated sports clubs in different sports sponsored and supported by a certain branch of industry or org. Particularily Spartak is considered the working class team because they were unlike "privileged" army and police/KGB teams (C)SKA and Dynamo supported by the unions of light industry. The revolting slave and gladiator Spartacus was a popular figure in socialist circles(see Spartakusbund in Germany).

Traktor is the same as Nefthekhimik basically with ЧТЗ the huge tractor factory, that during WW2 also became a huge tank factory being what the city always revolved around. There is a part of the city called Traktorozavodskiy rayon which is Tractor factory district. Nobody calls it that. it's just ЧТЗ(CheTeZe). If you meet someone from Chelyabinsk he/she certainly knows what ЧТЗ is, knows his/her hockey, lived across the steet from some famous hockey player and maybe even played/plays hockey now.

Metallurg is the steeler, so some Steelers in Russia as sports teams.

Lokomotiv is obviopusly the railroaders's team. Russia's state railroad company also sponsors it.

Dynamo was founded in 1923 as the KGB's predecessor's GPU NKVD and also became the police's team. Therefore it spread quickly across the country. There is apolice station in every town. The iconic "D" logo was made 1926 by one of it's first football players. The name though is a curious case. It was proposed by one of the early members Nedoley-Goncharenko, a GPU officer, who was himself a former employee of the Moscow "Dynamo" electric motors factory, that carried the name since 1913.

Sochi basically does not have a name. It's hockey club Sochi from Sochi.

Avangard aka. Avantgarde aka. Vanguard(that is what it is supposed to mean as there are many meanings) is a curious story too. This is their like 6th name. Originally they were Spartak Omsk. The name "Avangard" they got when affiliated to the factory named by the Great October Revolution, obviously not a name that could be incorporated for the sports team.

Amur is the river also giving the name to the whole region.

Both Avtomobilist and Torpedo are originally affiliated with the automobile industry. While is is too obvious with Avtomobilist Torpedo is also an automobile related term. It is the streamline design of the racing cars back in the day when those team names came into being which was called "torpedo" for now obvious reasons.

Hoping the KHL will include all these stories in their upcoming history section at the website. Obviously, that will include all stats from all Soviet championships. These stories would be something extra.

Does anybody know if the KHL translates into English their fantastic stories with the history of Soviet hockey? See in Russian.

Word Dynamo (Dinamo in croatian) has it roots in greek language, greek word "Dynamis" means force/power/strenght.
