Haan is not a major signing, almost as unexciting as Claesson signing.

De Haan was one of the top free agents available. Just like Justin Williams signing with the Canes last year.

Rangers could easily be better than the Canes this year. Not that either team should be proud of their finishes near the bottom of the Metro.

Lets say everything not bold is a big bag of question marks at this point, although their question marks look a little more promising. Maybe our top 6 is better, but that defense alone makes them look better on paper for this season.

Mostly agree, but McGinn is probably no longer a question mark. We know what we have with him, but the rest of your assessment on Carolina I agree with.

Unfortunately, I don't think our goalies are question marks, but in a bad way.

Their D is pretty good, but ours is underrated. Our goaltending is way better, and likely coaching staff as well.

How is Spooner a question mark?

And it's STILL a disaster, because they did next to nothing to improve it.

New coach and system
Smith is back in shape
Staal looks like he is in much better shape
Shattenkirk is back healthy
Gilmour, Kampfer, and Sproul are gone
Pionk and ADA look great
and we added Claesson and McQuaid
and we got good prospects in AHL ready to get called up.

To me it isn’t worth having a worse team and missing the playoffs because we were looking for a perfect trade of guys of this caliber.

I'd definitely move a "painful" piece for Hayes if we knew we could sign him. He's a 2C/3C and that goes a long way on our roster. But I think it would be somebody like Bean or Fleury.

and we got good prospects in AHL ready to get called up.

Said every fan hoping their team would contend but secretly knowing they wouldn't....I can say this because "we've got good prospects in the AHL ready to get called up" too.

Slavin and Hamilton are significantly better than any D on NYR. Canes have a pair premium to NYR group.

1) Slavin-Pesce
2) Skjei-Shattenkirk = De Haan-Hamilton
3) Staal-Pionk = Fleury-Faulk
4) Smith-DeAngelo = Cajkovsky/Bean-TVR

With those goalies you definitely need a great defense. And that defense of yours isn't overly physical either especially Slavin, TvR and Pesce. I like my defense to be physical, not all about point production or some hype.

In the end, we'll see which is better. I'm thinking even with out "goaltenders", our defense ends up superior to the NYRs.

So you're banking on Smith, who still doesn't look great, Staal, who doesn't look great, and Claesson and McQuaid... yikes.
