Value of: Kevin Hayes (Now, vs Jan 1st)

Hayes is a pending UFA. 26 years old, 6”5 220lb natural Center.

Left handed shooter. The epitome of a two way forward. Not very physical but makes excellent use of his size + reach. Natural playmaker who’s a pass 1st, shoot 2nd kind of guy.

Although he’s young enough to survive and contribute to a rebuilding team like the Rangers, he’s likely going to be moved given the direction NY is going. He supposedly wants 6m~ per, which, given a 83M+ cap, isn’t ludicrous for what he brings.

What’s his value as a rental, versus his value after January 1st when interested teams can talk extension..?

If the Rangers are going to move him, would he get that much more after the new year..? Curious to hear some thoughts.

Turris' extension didn't result in the Preds making one of their Top 4 defensemen available. Pacioretty's extension didn't motivate the Golden Knights to move Cody Glass.

An extension would help return something more than a late 1st as the best piece, but there are limits on the quality teams are going to be willing to give up given the circumstance. A very good, but not top-tier leaguewide, prospect on a team with the depth to withstand the loss and another solid asset is where I'd peg his value in that situation.

It will be interesting to see if the Rangers get lucky here. Hayes has to want to go to that potential trading partner and that team has to be willing to meet his asking price and give up the better assets to get him.
