Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4 million.
  • Race 7: The Critical Way (Samy Camacho/Jose Delgado) won the $100,000 Turf Dash Stakes.
  • Race 9: Miss Auramet (Roberto Alvarado. Jr./Edward Plesa, Jr.) won the $100,000 Lightning City Stakes.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $7.4 million.
  • Peter Walder's incredible run continued today. He has won the past seven races in which he entered. His run includes two horses entered in the same race today and as such he is 8 7-1-0 in this time. His next race is on Friday.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won three consecutive rides en route to a 3-win day which included career victory number 1,500. His recent surge has lifted him into a third-place tie with Paco Lopez for wins this meet. The kid can ride.
  • Race 8: Noble Indy (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher), who ran in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, gave the trainer his first win since February 14. He had lost 20 in a row. Today, Pletcher was among those nominated for the National Hall of Fame.
  • Javier Castellano is 12 0-2-0 since his return from hip surgery.
  • John Velazquez has 11 mounts on Saturday's enormous card but nothing in the Fountain of Youth.
  • Stakes: Saturday's card has 14 races including nine stakes of which eight are graded.
  • Replay show:

Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Off and running: The track re-opened after a lengthy absence due to severe weather. The most recent prior day of racing was February 13.
  • Leandro Goncalves rode five winners including a natural hat trick and four straight rides.
  • J.R. Caldwell entered four horses and won three times all with Leandro Goncalves riding.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 was hit for $538,692.34. A gigantic payout. The day began with $420,000+ in the pool.
  • Handle: Over $2 million.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $4 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: $1.9 million.
  • Race 9: Brooks Robinson (Alex Cintron/High McMahon) won. The Maryland-bred flashed the glove and led his team to victory for the first time since December 2019..
  • Alcibiades Cortez won consecutive races. The 61-year-old jockey entered today 1-for-28 in 2021. He won his first race in 1989 at the now defunct Hollywood Park (it hurts to say that!)
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • James Graham won four times. The meet's leading rider has 70 wins. His 45 wins in 2021 is third best in North America for the year.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $8 million.
  • Luis Saez rode three winners. His 78 wins is second best at the meet.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the opener and finale. He is third at the meet in wins. He is second in wins this year across North America. Rumor has it the kid can ride.
  • Javier Castellano won for the first time since November 14. The Hall of Famer had hip surgery late last year and was 0-for-13 in his return.
  • Replay show:

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Back in action: First day of racing since February 11. Racing had been canceled due to extreme weather in the area.
  • Handle: $3.5 million.
  • Race 2: Won by a 51-to-1 shot.
  • Race 4: Dusty Hill (Terry Thompson/Tim Dixon) wired the field at 41-to-1 and won by more than 12 lengths, partly in a hand ride. One of those uncommon moments.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 4 was a mammoth $48,000+ For an everyday card, that is as big as I recall in recent years.
  • Bombs away: Races 2 through 4 saw 54-to-1, 14-to-1 and 41-to-1 shots win. That's the Oaklawn I know. And to build on that, no one hit the Pick 3. No one! It paid out to those who hit two legs.
  • David Cabrera rode three winners.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Canceled: One possible positive test due to the C-virus.

Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, now an analyst and agent, has stated that his client Drayden Van Dyke will ride at Churchill Downs and Keneeland this spring. DVD is one of the top riders in California, though has been subpar lately, and a go-to rider for Bob Baffert. He will remain in Santa Anita through March. Keeneland operates April 2-23.

The Jockey Club released its annual rule book this week. Among the facts and figures are horses foaled by state.

Ohio has seen a boon in its breeding with a 122% increase from 2010 to 2019. Kentucky leads the way with over 8,000 horses foaled in 2019.

The states that foaled the most horses:
  • Kentucky,
  • California,
  • Florida,
  • New York,
  • Louisiana,
  • Pennsylvania,
  • Maryland.
States that had no horses foaled in 2019 (this most recent year studied) are:
  • Maine,
  • New Hampshire,
  • Vermont,
  • Rhode Island,
  • Connecticut,
  • Georgia,
  • Alaska,
  • Hawaii.
Parties in Georgia have introduced legislation to construct up to three race tracks in the state. But that seems to be one step of many before it can finalized.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $5 million.
  • Trevor McCarthy rode three winners.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $9.2 million.
  • Race 4: Known Agenda (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher), a $135,000 purchase by the group headed by Florida Panthers' owner Vinny Viola, won by 11 lengths and is instantly pointed to the Florida Derby. A brilliant outing for the colt. Following the race, jockeys Ortiz, Jr. and Paco Lopez were involved in a confrontation which led to probation for the balance of the meet.

  • Replay show:

Turfway Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Wait for Nairobi (Edgar Morales/Rey Hernandez) won the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes and with it 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks.
  • Race 5: Hush of a Storm (Santiago Gonzalez/William Morey) won the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes and with it received 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The New York-bred is a perfect 3 3-0-0 at Turfway. His only other race was a loss at Churchill Downs. The result led to major payouts in the $.50 Pick 4 ($20k) and $.50 Pick 5 ($23k).

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Adam Beschizza had a riding triple.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $3.5 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $5.8 million.

There will be no racing at Marquis Downs for another year...:(
Sask. thoroughbred horse racing season axed for another year due to COVID-19

I read about that a few days ago. Tough news for the locals. Hopefully, the situation is fixed and there is some normalcy. New Mexico in the U.S. is the one area in which horse racing has been placed in an uncomfortable position but otherwise there have been plenty of plusses from the smaller tracks in spots like Nebraska and that is in addition to many larger facilities. There probably isn't a comparative that can soothe people in your area but any blight on the sport should resonate. Take heart.

Saturday's enormous card at Gulfstream. I predict $30,000,000 in handle especially under gorgeous 80 degree sun-soaked skies.

An exhilarating day at the south Florida playpen. The eventual total was $31.7 million. It is the second highest Fountain of Youth card handle, second only to the $36 million plus wagered last year. No attendance trackside; otherwise, the numbers would have even more staggering.
Far more to come.

  • Steve Asmussen entered horses at three tracks, won at each, and had a 7-win day.
  • Todd Pletcher entered horses at two tracks, won at both, and had a 5-win day.
  • Brad Cox entered horses at four tracks, won at three, and had a 5-win day.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $7.5 million.
  • Track: Sloppy though the sun emerged later in the day.
  • Race 3: Mr. Buff (Manny Franco/John Kimmel) wired the field and won the $100,000 Stymie Stakes.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: $1.8 million.
  • Track: Sloppy conditions though the sun shone later in the day.
  • Alexander Crispin, defending Apprentice of the Year in North America, won three times. He is also the leading rider at the meet. Laurel breaks a lot of talent and has over time.
  • John Robb entered four races and won three times. He is at 28% this year.
  • Races 1-2: The $2 double paid $165 which was better than expected with a 3-to-5 shot winning the second leg and by more than 14 lengths. The longest shot on the board won the opener at 25-to-1 and wired the field in the slop.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $5.9 million.
  • Track: Fast and firm under pleasant skies.
  • Leading riders: Samy Camacho has 66 wins which is one more than Antonio Gallardo's 65.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $31.7 million bet which is the second highest in track history for a Fountain of Youth card. Last year, $36 million was wagered.
  • Card: 14 races under warm conditions. The track was fast and firm.
  • Riders' mounts:
    • Irad Ortiz, Jr. (14): he rode the entire card; another extraordinary feat for him.
    • Jose Ortiz (12),
    • Junior Alvarado (12),
    • Tyler Gaffalione (12) and
    • John Velazquez (11).
  • Jose Ortiz had a 3-win day. Other riders with multiple wins included John Velazquez, Junior Alvarado, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Tyler Gaffalione with two each.
  • Todd Pletcher entered 13 horses in 10 races and won four times. He finished 13 4-0-0, nine times not hitting the board but four wins is exceptional for any trainer especially on a deep card such as today.
  • Danny Gargan is 47 18-9-8 (38%/74%) at the meet. Those numbers can't be overlooked especially at this meet. I mentioned prior to the meet to give his horses an extra look but even I didn't think he'd have numbers so majestic.
  • Races 1-2: John Velazquez won the first two races of the day.
  • Race 3: Con Lima (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) was elevated to victory following an inquiry involving the DQ'd Spanish Loveaffair (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse). The original winner was placed fourth.
  • Race 4: Phantom Current (Paco Lopez/Brian Lynch) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes.
  • Race 5: Collaborate (Tyler Gaffalione/Saffie Joseph), a son to Into Mischief, was victorious in his second career start. Stop, collaborate and Listen! Ice, ice baby.
  • Race 6: Annex (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) is now a perfect 2 2-0-0. I mentioned this horse after his stunning maiden performance five weeks ago. He did not disappoint.
  • Race 7: Attachment Rate (Jose Ortiz/Dale Romans) won. The Virginia-bred finished 14th in last year's Kentucky Derby.
  • Race 8: Venezuelan Hug (Junior Alvarado/Danny Gargan) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Canadian Turf Stakes. The rail was the place to be.
ddb24a6cd0194b28abf23e8fced44ba3.jpg

Photo: Coglianese Photos
  • Race 9: Fearless (Irad Ortiz. Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 2 $200,000 WinStar Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes. A horse for the course, now 3-for-3 lifetime at Gulfstream, 1-for-4 elsewhere.
  • Race 10: Saayaaf (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) won. The race had over $3.4 million bet into it.
  • Race 11: Got Stormy (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) won the Grade 3 $125,000 Honey Fox Stakes in a photo finish. Got Stormy won for the 11th time in 27 starts and has earned well over $2 million The 6-year-old mare entered off a 5th place finish in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
5e3de242569e43358ef9fe739685d600.jpg
  • Race 12: Wholebodemeister (Edgard Zayas/Juan Avila) was the shock winner of the day as she won the Davona Dale Stakes by more than six lengths at 52-to-1. The win came with 50 qualifying points to the Kentucky Oaks. The $1 exacta was $572.60. The $.50 tri was over $2,500. The $.10 super was over $14,000. Absolutely stunning numbers with 52-1, 9-1, 53-1 and 84-1 shots finishing 1 through 4.

  • Race 13: Antoinette (Jose Ortiz/Bill Mott) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Very One Stakes. The $1 double was an enormous $788.50.
  • Race 14: Greatest Honour (Jose Ortiz/Shug McGaughey) was sent off the even-money favorite and won the Grade 2 $300,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes in its 74th edition. The horse is riding a 3-win streak and is 6 3-1-2 lifetime. Not imposing career numbers for a Kentucky Derby contender but the colt is on a roll and is high on many top ten lists. As far as pools, check out these babies: the exacta, Pick 4, Pick 5 and Pick 6 pools each exceeded $1 million. Some tracks don't break a million on a daily card. Gulfstream did it four times in one race. Over $7 million bet into this one race.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Brad Cox entered three races and won three. He is the defending Trainer of the Year in North America and could have the leading contender for this year's Kentucky Derby.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $9.5 million.
  • Track: Sloppy, muddy.
  • Card: Three stakes including two enormous graded stakes.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr.-Steve Asmussen combined to win three times.
  • Luis Saez visited and cleaned house by winning the two biggest races on the card.
  • Race 7: Mystic Guide (Luis Saez/Michael Stidham) won the $600,000 Grade 3 Razorback Stakes. The same owners -- Godolphin -- would later win the Southwest Stakes.
MYSTIC-GUIDE-The-Razorback-Handicap-G3-62nd-Running-02-27-21-R07-OP-Tight-Finish-01-414x276.jpg
  • Race 10: Essential Quality (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) won the Grade 3 $750,000 Southwest Stakes in impressive fashion. The win gave the connections 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The son to Tapit could very well be the leading contender for the Kentucky Derby at this juncture. He is 4 4-0-0 lifetime and has already earned $1.7 million. Godolphin, the UAE-based potent horse ownership, have long desired a Ky. Derby winner and right now are in good shape to at least have a strong chance.

Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Steve Asmussen won three times. He is 233 wins away from first place all-time in North America.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $7.6 million.
  • Card: Nothing exceptional for a Santa Anita Saturday but that will change with next weekend's card.
  • Race 1: Hockey Dad (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill) won the opener. Owned by noted Detroit Red Wings' fans Paul Reddam of Reddam Racing.
  • Race 9: Rock Your World (Umberto Rispoli/John Sadler) won the $100,000 Pasadena Stakes.
  • Race 10: Malakai Moxie (Jessica Pyfer/Phil D'Amato) won. The young jockey is the step-daughter to the trainer.
  • Pick 6: The carryover for Sunday's card will be over $509,000.

Paco Lopez vs. Irad Ortiz, Jr.

I saw this dispute after the race. It appeared they were animated towards each other. Both are aggressive and Paco has a certain reputation. I do believe they have a history with each other. Paco has been oft-suspended in Florida.

Irad Ortiz Jr. has been fined $1,000 and both he and Paco Lopez have been placed on probation for the remainder of the meet due to an altercation between the two riders that took place following the 4th race, won by Ortiz aboard Known Agenda, last Friday at Gulfstream Park. Sunday. February 28, 2021

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $5 million.
  • Eric Cancel won twice and has now crept to within six of Kendrick Carmouche's leading total of 60. The bigger named jockeys are at Gulfstream and Jose Lezcano is sidelined with injury. Other riders have a chance to enhance their reputations. Cancel has been doing well.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: $2 million.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4.8 million.
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 was nailed for $119,000+. That is a gigantic sum for almost any track including Tampa Bay.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $13.4 million. An electric weekend at Gulf. Though a glitch as the simulcast feed, website and live stream went down on Saturday and perhaps Sunday from different accounts.
  • Race 1: The two longest shots on the board finished 1-2 at 34-to-1 and 27-to-1, respectively. Both were the only first-time starters in the race. The $1 exacta was $620.10. The $,50 tri was $2,600. The $.10 super was an astonishing $13.5k What a way to start someone's day.
  • Races 4-5: Javier Castellano won consecutive races and at 16-to-1 and 7-to-1. The Hall of Famer may be getting back into rhythm following a lengthy absence due to hip surgery.
  • Race 9: Sonar (Junior Alvarado/Carlos David) connected at 14-to-1, the longest shot on the board. Alvarado is having a fantastic meet. Sonar is owned by ex-Florida Panthers' owner Alan Cohen.
  • Race 11: Psychic Ability (Jose Ortiz/Greg Sacco) won as the longest shot on the board at 20-to-1. Jose Ortiz....longest shot on the board..... Those words do not compute.
  • Race 12: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $19,000. The $.50 Pick 5 returned a stunning $71,000+. The $.20 Pick 6 winners collected over $61,000 apiece.
  • Replay show:

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

  • Handle: $6.2 million.
  • Race 7: Windmill (Joe Talamo/Larry Jones) won the $150,000 Dixie Belle Stakes. The 3-year-old daughter to Street Sense was a $330,000 purchase and is 2 2-0-0 lifetime. "The Ladies' Man" strikes again: few trainers handle fillies as well as Jones. The jockey ended the day 1-for-38 at the meet but he has a potentially good-looking filly here.

  • Race 9: Monomoy Girl (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) made her 6-year-old debut and did not disappoint as the overwhelming choice in the $250,000 Grade 3 Bayakoa Stakes. She has now earned over $4.57 million.

  • Record: 16 14-2-0
  • Money earned: $4.5 million.
  • Win Streak: 6
  • Extended Streak: 11 wins in her past 12 starts
  • Tracks: She has won at seven of the eight tracks in which she has raced.
  • Likes Kentucky: 9 8-1-0 at Keeneland and Churchill Downs combined.
  • Purchased: $100,000 in 2016.
  • Sold: $9,500,000 in 2020 to Spendthrift Farm

  • Races 8-9-10: Brad Cox, the reigning Trainer of the Year in North America, earned a natural hat trick. A difficult feat for any trainer.
  • Larry Jones won twice. I am not sure the last time he won twice on the same card but he will always be a personal favorite as he advances in years and has a smaller stock than the past. Great trainer! Edit: Upon a search, the last time he won twice on the same card was September 5, 2016 at Delaware.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $8.5 million.
  • Race 7: Bedrock (Juan Hernandez/Peter Miller) gave the jockey his 2,000th lifetime win. He has been solid since moving his tack from the Bay Area.

This upcoming weekend's Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks preps.

The weekend is arguably the first significant weekend nationwide for Derby preps. The stakes get larger. The competition gets magnified and even the losers can boast and boost based on the points system.

RaceTrackPoints Awarded
Gotham Aqueduct Racetrack (NY)50-20-10-5
Tampa Bay DerbyTampa Bay Downs (FL)50-20-10-5
San Felipe StakesSanta Anita Park (CA)50-20-10-5

The Kentucky Oaks will be represented by the Busher (Aqueduct) and the 50-20-10-5 system and the Honeybee (Oaklawn) with the same 50-20-10-5 points distribution. On Sunday, Santa Anita will host the Santa Ysabel and that race will also have a 50-20-10-5 points system.

nice review up @ Harness Racing Update about the decision to leave Scarborough Downs behind after 7 decades.

basic highlights of the review that I saw were:

1st time that Penn National, which operates the 2nd commercial license at Bangor, and First Tracks Investments, LLC will not compete either with each other or the 8 tracks that hold harness racing as part of the Fairs.

Plainridge was also mentioned a few times in the article, it is disadvantageous for our harness racing future to rely on Plainridge as an option for Southern Maine horses/horsemen in our industry.

the First Tracks investment and lease at Cumberland will be through 2023-24, but there is intention of a new venue somewhere in York County about a 5/8 mile track that won't be tied to a casino....

yes, the Downs OTB remains there temporarily as has been previously posted, even though the actual track is decommissioned and slated for redevelopment beyond the pandemic just as Maine Health bought and retrofitted the grandstand for a vaccination site, it is finished as a race track....

there also likely will be simulcasting at FTI Commercial track, without the aid of a casino.... something California has achieved and FTI has received advisement on....

the 2021 dates are now official:

May 3rd to July 31st, FTI at Cumberland Raceway;

July-Nov the 8 fairs that hold harness racing with a sprinkling of Bangor dates . Oxford has a harness track within their fair facilities but has discontinued it due to financial constraints not limited to the pandemic.

Nov 3rd to the end of 2021 weather permitting FTI returns to Cumberland.

Maine racing calendar (harness): mshrc-2021-racedate-calendar.pdf (maine.gov)

Is this the article cited?

The Maine attraction - Harness Racing Update

“We have eight pari-mutuel fairs in Maine, and none of them ran last year,” he said, noting that all 2020 fairs were cancelled due to COVID-19 and the Oxford Fair had already discontinued racing years before the pandemic due to rising costs. “Essentially, there are two entities that will operate out of Cumberland [Fairgrounds] next year: The Cumberland Farmers’ Club, which owns the property and holds the fair, are going to run their regular meet, COVID willing, in their regular time frame, which is towards the end of September.”

The second “entity” is the inaugural meet approved for First Tracks Investments. It is a 56-day pari-mutuel meet slated to run from Saturday, May 8, 2021 through Saturday, July 31, 2021, then take a break to allow the fair season to take place as usual, with a few dates mixed in at Bangor. First Tracks will resume racing Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021 at Cumberland Fairgrounds, with its last race date of the year set for Dec. 31.

“For the first time since I’ve been involved, the two commercial tracks will not race at all during the fair season,” said a pleased Jennings, correcting himself to mention a few fair-season dates at Bangor that will not conflict with fair dates. “They basically moved all of their racing to fit around the fair season. It’s huge, really. There’s really not enough horses to have a commercial track going at the same time as a fair track.”

Scarborough Downs is completely out of the picture, except as a temporary OTB location doing double-duty as a COVID-19 vaccination site since early February. Wex Inc., a financial services company, has built a 200-square foot office building on the track property; further redevelopment will follow. “That track is not going to be available for racing,” confirmed the racing commission representative.

We can excerpt here but the preference is to form an opinion based on what is cited.

I also placed a link to the state's racing calendar.

NEW YORK
There have been hints in the recent past that Oaklawn (AR) with its sizeable purses has caught the attention of tracks including New York. The competition has been beneficial for many horsemen. Now comes word that Belmont will see its own growth including $90,000 MSW races. That is Kentucky-like.

New York was having issues with workmen's comp and taxes. Other locales were far more advantageous including Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas and even Louisiana. But this will bring a new dimension into the dynamic of shipping. New York had reduced race days because of a reduction in available horses and more desirable locations. Welcome back.

Record Belmont Purses Seen as Spur for Claiming Game - BloodHorse

About two months from now, those numbers will take on even more glitter. When the upcoming spring/summer meet begins at Belmont Park, it will offer record purse levels across the board that will help both NYRA's biggest and smallest outfits and is being viewed as a means to boost field size and spur more wagering.

At the top end of the scale there will be $90,000 maiden special weight races and allowance races that begin at $92,000 and rise to $96,000. In comparison, at the 2020 fall Belmont meet, maiden special weight races were worth $63,000 with a first level allowance race carrying a $65,000 purse. At the current Aqueduct meet the purses are an extremely healthy $80,000 and $82,000 for those levels, yet that's $10,000 below what awaits horsemen at Belmont Park when that meet begins April 22.
-----------------------------

And now insiders have a reason to ship from Oaklawn to New York...

Adding even more honey to the pot in hopes of bringing new faces to the Belmont Park backstretch, NYRA introduced an "Oaklawn Ship & Win" program that will offer a 30% purse bonus for the first two NYRA races at the Aqueduct spring meet or Belmont Park spring/summer meet by horses who made their last start at the 2021 Oaklawn Park meet. Those connections will also receive a $1,500 check to cover any expenses.

"With the 30% Oaklawn bonus, you are running for $71,500 in a $25,000 claiming race," Panza said. "I don't know how you lose money doing that."
