  • Meadowlands: The harness track in New Jersey reported that handle exceeded $4 million on Saturday for a third time in 2021, a figure reached three times in total in 2020. The weekend figure reached $7 million for a third time in 2021, again a mark reached three times in 2020.
  • Life is Good, the top Kentucky Derby horse for many at this juncture, is scheduled to race next March 6 in the Grade 2 San Felipe at Santa Anita.
  • Holiday Monday. Both Florida tracks were dark but re-open Wednesday.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Patrick Quick sported a 0-for-12 record in 2021. The trainer entered two today and both were victorious.
  • Race 7: My Boy Tate (Manny Franco/Michelle Nevin) won the $100,000 Hollie Hughes Stakes.
  • Handle: $5.7 million.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Joe Taylor entered today with five wins in 2021. The trainer won three times on this card.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Claudio Gonzalez, the meet's leading trainer, won twice.
  • Feargal Lynch won for the first time since July 17. It was his second ride since suffering neck and back fractures last year which sidelined him roughly 200 days.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Race 1: A win by more than 15 lengths.
  • Race 5: The longest shot on the board at 53-to-1 was victorious and paid $108.00.
  • Race 6: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,800.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Canceled: Weather.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • James Graham added two wins to his meet lead which stands at 62.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Canceled: An employee in the jockeys' room tested positive for C-virus. The cards today and Tuesday were both canceled.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Kyle Frey won three times. He leads the meet with 28 victories.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $9 million.
  • Flavien Prat and Juan Hernandez both won three times. Prat is 13 7-2-0 the past two days and leads the meet with 30 victories. Hernandez is second with 29.
  • Umberto Rispoli is headed to Saudi Arabia to ride this weekend. He is third at the meet with 27 wins.
  • Joel Rosario went 5 1-2-2 today.
  • Race 6: Hozier (Joel Rosario) and Fenway (Abel Cedillo) finished 1-2 and both were trained by Bob Baffert. The winner was purchased for $625,000 in 2019 and broke his maiden today in his second try.

OAKLAWN
What a dramatic shift a year can make. Oaklawn, which had a stellar meet in 2020 and was arguably the top sports entity in dealing with the C-virus so successfully, is having a struggle with the Arkansas wintry weather.

The re-scheduled racing for this upcoming Feb. 18-21 week of racing has been suspended yet again.

While tomorrow (Feb. 16) is the expected announcement, it appears the Southwest Stakes, a meaningful step towards the Kentucky Derby, will be held Feb. 27 or 28 but that is yet to be confirmed.

Fonner Park in Nebraska, which obliterated its handle record with over $100 million accumulated in 2020, opens Friday weather permitting. The track will run Fridays through Sundays until May 1.

Horse racing and the sports world should be grateful for the efforts of the smaller tracks which thrived and endured in 2020.

The track is very popular with locals but received rare national attention for handling the rockiness of 2020 in addition to offering a reformatted meet calendar to help satisfy viewers and fans.

Oaklawn

Oaklawn Adds Races and Days

After losing eight days of racing due to record-breaking winter weather, Oaklawn has added both races and extra race days to make up for canceled days last week and this coming weekend. In addition, the Hot Springs oval previously announced the further postponement of their President's Day weekend stakes to the weekend of Feb. 27-28.

A total of 27 races have been added to the schedule as well as two additional race days Wednesday, Mar. 31 and Wednesday, Apr. 28. The track is also increasing purses for all overnight races by as much as $4,000 per race. These increases will go into effect when racing resumes Thursday, Feb. 25.

The purse increases will average 5% per overnight race, meaning maiden special weights will be increased from $82,000 to $86,000 and top allowance races will increase from $88,000 to as much as $92,000.
-------------------------------------

Aqueduct's card on Thursday has been canceled due to expected snow and related weather conditions.

------------------------------------

Sam Houston has canceled through Saturday due to continued destructive weather in Texas.

-------------------------------------

Tampa Bay has a few nicknames including "the best little track in America" and it has boosted purses for a third time this meet. Indicative of a strong meet. Good job by the locals. One of the best turf tracks in the U.S.

Expected rainy weather in the upcoming few days could bring racing off the turf for the weekend cards.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: Approached $3 million.
  • Ruben Silvera, the leading rider at the meet, had three wins.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Daniel Centeno rode three winners amid a 4 3-1-0 afternoon.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode five winners and ended another stupendous day with a 9 5-2-0 mark. He won for five different trainers. He has won with nine of his past 17 mounts the last two racing days. Has he already solidified at least a nominee for Jockey of the Year for 2021? The superlatives have been exhausted.

  • Javier Castellano returned for his first mount since undergoing hip surgery in mid-November.
  • Handle: $6.7 million.
  • Replay show:

  • Among the track canceled due to weather issues: Aqueduct (NY), Charles Town (WV), Delta Downs (LA), Oaklawn (AR), Sam Houston (TX) and Turfway (KY).
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Junior Alvarado rode three winners and is now in sixth place at the meet. He has never ridden at Gulf's winter meet prior to this year. Not bad, eh?!
  • Race 7: World Tour (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) debuted to a victory. She could be headed for bigger things. Mott doesn't exactly have a stellar record with first-timers in his career 98%) but is having an exceptional meet (30% overall).
  • Handle: $9.5 million.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):

  • Off the turf: Many scratches and racing was conducted on a listed "good" dirt track only.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Handle: $2.7 million.

Sunland Park (New Mexico) meet has been canceled.

Daily Racing Form | Horse Racing | Entries | Results | PPs (Past Performances)

The New Mexico Racing Commission on Thursday approved the cancellation of the 2020-2021 meet at Sunland Park, according Izzy Trejo, the agency's executive director. The state's tracks have been unable to operate their casinos under New Mexico's Department of Health orders. The gaming revenues are to key to purses. The casinos at the state's tracks have been closed since the early stages of the pandemic in 2020.

The status of the Sunland Park meet had been addressed month to month by the commission as parties awaited any movement of orders. The Sunland meet typically runs from late December into April.

Umberto Rispoli will not be allowed in Saudi Arabia due to what seems to be related to proper paperwork involving the C-virus. He was nearby from how I understood the description.

John Velazquez is also not allowed in Saudi Arabia.

EDIT: Now with some clarity, here is what happened with U.S. based riders Umberto Rispoli and John Velazquez:

Umberto Rispoli, John Velazquez, and retired rider-turned-broadcaster Gary Stevens will not make this year's Saudi Cup after a series of travel headaches related to overbooked flights and COVID-19 test timelines. The trio, along with jockey Joel Rosario, arrived at airports Wednesday to discover their tickets had been cancelled. Rispoli, Stevens and Rosario were flying out of LAX and Velazquez from Miami. They were told Qatar Airways had double booked the second leg of their journeys from Doha, Qatar, to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and when the extra booking was cancelled, their tickets for the first leg were automatically cancelled.

Stevens, Rispoli, and Rosario rebooked flights from LAX for Thursday and were sitting on the plane in Los Angeles when they were informed they would not be allowed to travel to their final destination. Saudi officials are requiring a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival into Riyadh and because they didn't leave as scheduled, they were told their tests would expire by time of arrival. Rosario was able to remain onboard after he showed the results of an additional rapid test he had taken after the previous day's delay. Stevens and Rispoli were told they could have been allowed to go to their layover in Qatar, but would not have been allowed to board a plane to Riyadh from there.

Initial reports on Thursday night incorrectly said Velazquez had been stranded at a rescheduled layover in Spain after making his flight out of Miami. In fact, Velazquez never boarded the flight for Spain after being informed he would have been violating the country's COVID-19 protocols to move between terminals to get to his Riyadh flight.

William Buick will replace Velazquez aboard Tacitus, Mickael Barzalona will substitute for Rispoli aboard Max Player in the Saudi Cup and Joel Rosario picks up two additional mounts: Cowan in the Saudi Derby to replace Rispoli and New York Central in place of Velazquez.

  • Bad weather: Penn National, Laurel, Sam Houston, Turfway and Oaklawn were among track cancellations
  • Meadows (PA): The harness track in western PA has an appealing color scheme on its simulcast. White and easy-to-read fonts on a black background with a little gray and dark red. Very nice!
  • Saratoga (NY): Undoubtedly one of the most popular meets in North America and has often been stated a required visit by any horse player. Saratoga announced its annual 40-day summer meet schedule which will start July 15 and run into September 6. There will be at least one stakes -- a total of 76 -- on every race day and purses for those races will be $21,500,000. The 152nd running of the Travers Stakes will be held August 28. Among changes, the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Flower Bowl will be held at the Spa; prior, the races were held at Belmont Park.
  • Delaware (DE): The 84th season of racing. The 77-day meet will run from May 26 - October 16.
  • Marquis Downs (SK): Saskatchewan's race track could be dormant for 2021 based on reported grim news. Here's hoping the situation can get resolved. Saskatchewan Horsemen Facing Uncertainty As Their Lone Racetrack Could See A Second Year Of No Racing - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report
  • New Mexico: Uncertainty in the state, caused by related closings of casinos that assist in horse racing. Tribal casinos are open but not commercial venues which need government approval. It appears that racing will not be conducted at tracks until casinos are opened as track operators could conduct racing (with casinos closed) but that would lead to a reduced purse structure. As a result: Sunland canceled its meet; Sunray Park does not appear to be conducting a meet in 2021; Ruidoso Downs is scheduled to open May 21; The Downs at Albuquerque opens later in the year and then Zia Park runs towards the end of the calendar year.
  • Oregon: Grants Pass Downs, the main track in the state, will conduct racing in two separate meets so not to overlap with the state's four fairs.
    • The Eastern Oregon Livestock Show (Union)
    • Crooked River Roundup (Prineville)
    • Tillamook County Fair (Tillamook)
    • Harney County Fair (Harney)
King Abdulaziz Racetrack (Saudi Arabia):
  • Shane Foley (Ireland-based) won two of the four legs of the stc International Jockeys Challenge to take the International Jockeys' title with 30 points. Saudi Arabian jockey Adel Alfouraidi finished second overall. The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia created the $500,000 Saudi International Handicap to promote and encourage participation of its enormous weekend event.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Eric Cancel rode three winners on five mounts. He has the second highest total of wins at the meet.
  • Rudy Rodriguez trained three winners and leads the meet with 22 victories.
  • Handle: $4.4 million.
  • Weather: Postcard-like scenery late in the day as snow fell on the oval.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled and moved: Today's card will be moved to Thursday.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $3.7 million.
  • Samy Camacho maintains a 2-win lead over Antonio Gallardo in the riders' standings.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione and Miguel Vasquez each rode three winners. Gaffalione has the fourth most wins at the meet and his 17% winning record is second best only to Irad Ortiz, Jr.
  • Peter Walder was a perfect 3 3-0-0 and currently has trained winners with the past four horses sent out.
  • Handle: $9.6 million.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):

  • James Graham won three times and leads the meet with 65 victories.
  • Trainers: Thomas Amoss (28 wins), Ron Faucheux (27), Brad Cox (26) and Steve Asmussen (25) are in a nip-and-tuck-and-nip-and-tuck battle for meet supremacy among trainers.
  • Conditions: Off the turf yet again.
Fonner (Nebraska):
  • Opening day: Today began the meet which runs weekends only. Last year, the track handled a record-shattering $100 million as it operated during a period when few other sporting events were held.
  • Weather: Sloppy conditions.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Justin Evans entered five races and won four times. He sported a record of 9 4-1-0 today and is the runaway meet leader among all trainers.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $7 million+
  • Flavien Prat began the day with a natural hat trick and ended with four wins on five mounts. His second win of the day gave him 1,000 victories in North America. Prat is an astounding 11-1-0 with his past 17 mounts.

Auburn, Maine
apparently, from what I just saw on Bloodhorse.

Arlington Park will be going the way of Hollywood Park where SoFi Stadium now occupies that real estate.

CBRE Development is handling the sale for CDI.... the plan is for redevelopment of Arlington Park as is currently stands..... however, Illinois Thoroughbreds will press on, despite this decision today

Arlington Park up for sale now.... Churchill Downs now willing to divest themselves of this iconic facility

It is appalling but not shocking. This is akin to the Cleveland Browns or Baltimore Colts relocating. Sadly, it is the inflammatory part of sport. Arlington is a shell of its once greatness. CDI has morphed into an inhospitable entity from many avenues. The ball is in their court. If they do seek a license, they better promote the hell out of the sport for Illinois. Hawthorne is a nice family owned track and with sports betting may see an advancement in revenue but Churchill killed a great representation of racing glory.
