If the Marlies lose in the first round of the AHL playoffs, would Kapanen have a shot at the World Championship team?

In my opinion, only if he's absolutely on fire for the rest of this season. There are many vets in Europe who still bring more to table. So basically, no.

Not a chance. He scored the golden goal in the WJC but other than that he was at best mediocore in the competition. He would turn a liability in a higher tier tournament. Kapanen is probably a few years away even of becoming an NHL'er.

He is not even close enough of an "established" player to have a direct spot in the squad, he'd have to book his through the preliminary camp. And by the theoretical time the Marlies would exit is too late to attend.

He'd really have to score around 1.5PPG pace for the rest of the season to have a shot at a direct spot. And even then he'd need a little luck with some injuries and other declinations.

If there's one player in the AHL with hopes of making it just like that, it's Rantanen.
