I can see both Kapanen and Johnsson being signed on bridge deals that will fit nicely on our cap.

Kapanen 3 years/ 8 million
Johnsson 3 years / 6 million

That's fair but imo goes even more to my point that he probably won't get that high up in points without PP time. Less than 10 players in the league got 60+ even strength points last season.

not sure where OISH% is at this year with scoring up - I would guess it's up but I don't know by how much.

OISH% ES

Marner 13.8 (3.39p/60, 3.13p1/60)
Matthews 13.8 (4.44p/60, 3.46p1/60)
Tavares 12.7 (2.98p/60, 2.59p1/60)
Kapanen 11.7 (2.86p/60, 2.29p1/60)
Hyman 11.5 (1.43p/60, 0.72p1/60)
Johnsson 10.7 (2.16p/60, 1.68p1/60)

kappy's hardly the only shooting luck beneficiary. and that's probably not even really that high an oish% in this year's nhl.

and kappy doesn't have to keep up anywhere near that kind of p/60 to be a legit top-3nd producer.

Alright, still think he won't be at 60 even strength points at the end of the year. That's pretty much my thoughts on it.

both for a while, make the decision on which to keep when you have to, by then we'll have a lot better handle on what each of them is

Doesn't mean to much but scouts used to say kap was better than nylander.

I like both Andrea's and kasperi. Tough choice but I'd probably keep the younger one

Keep both if we can, but at some point we're going to need to swing a forward for a defenseman. I think Kappy is the more valuable of the two (Johnsson is no slouch though, 10 points in his last 7 games!) so we're going to get a better piece for him. Additionally, Johnsson is a LW where we're quite thin, and Kappy is on the deep RW behind Marner and Nylander. If Kappy scores 25 goals this year and produces in the playoffs, then we can probably get a pretty good RHD for him at the draft.

We need to keep them both to be successful but we may need to be sorcerers
Move some good Canadian Kids and some grit and truculent NHL player fakers
Keep those Eurotrash skaters, passers and scorers
But Brown, Ennis, Hyman , Kadri or Dermott could be moved for cap space if we can find takers

I also do have a bit of a fear if trading Kapanen. The speed and skill. That goal vs the Bruins in game 7. Or this year vs. San Jose. That is the definition of game-breaking talent.

It's easily KK for me. Kapanen is one of the few physical players we possess. He was getting right in there against the Bruins. He has size, skill and speed is just a level or more better than Johnsson. That's no slight on Johnsson either because he has been terrific and has looked like a top 6 player over the last 8-10 games.

Sign both, trade Marleau, trade Brown. Have Hyman and Grundstrom as an epic shutdown line. Next season top 6:

Johnsson-Matthews-Marner
Kapanen-Tavares-Nylander
More like:
Nylander-Matthews-Kapanen
Johnsson-Tavares-Marner
Grundstrom-Kadri-Hyman
Korshkov-Goat-Brown

Bottom six could really shut down some lines.

Kapanen. He's younger, produced better at relative ages, and is more versatile. But, obviously, I hope we keep both. I just think Kapanen brings more to the table in regards to his speed and his value as a PKer. He's a guy who no-matter what line he is on will generate chances just off his speed.

If there is a good deal for a top 4 D or a forward like Anderson and I had to choose, I keep Kappy.
If there is no deal, I keep them both.

Keep both, move Brown.

If I HAD to choose between the two for whatever reason, I'd keep Kapanen. Keep in mind he's 2 years younger and more proven at the NHL level.

Caveat though, that it also depends on the trade return. Kapanen likely has better trade value, so if his value is high enough to help us address the RHD issue, then I'd move him.

Lol.
Dubas not gonna trade one of the core players.

So that's why he crafted a contract that makes Nylander amazingly tradable to an internal cap franchise, and a relative hindrance to a pressed up against the cap franchise like the leafs, because he's not gonna trade him.

You do realize how favourable the contract is for Nylander? Guy makes around 17M in the 6 months after signing his deal.

I still can't believe there are dumb enough Leaf fans that think we should trade him.

<cute little girl meme saying "Why don't we keep both?">

But seriously, Kapanen seems more solid and durable. Johnsson's super slow start makes me concerned that his career is going to be full of these ebbs and flows. Kapanen isn't super consistent but he's a younger player who is trending in that direction.

Is there any way we can give Brown and Hyman's contracts to them?

I wouldn't read anything into the way the contract is structured. This will probably be done for all their top players, frontloading etc. is just a way of giving them a little bit extra without impacting the cap.
