Kaberle was a great PMD in his prime, Markov was a top 5 D (at that time) in his prime
What year was Markov a top 5D?

Lidstrom, Niedermayer, Pronger, Chara were all better then him from 06 to 2010

If he was top 5 it was 5th and a very close 5th which could be shared with several players for maybe 2 years

Gonchar, Phaneuf were all similar level or better from 06 - 10, with Mike Green being better in the final two years of that period, equal in 1, and much worse in 2.

He was a top 10 defender from 08-10, but wasn't really top 5. I'd still give him the vote over kaberle who was closer to top 15 then top 10 but Markov is being overrated if you have him as a surefire top 5D in his prime

Markov was better, but Kaberle gets underrated because his career went downhill quickly after Toronto and he looked soft in Boston.

Markov made so many players look great beside him on that blue line, was a trooper for the habs for such a long time, too bad is kneee injuries cut is prime short, miss him and habs have not been the same team since he left, terrible PP since the general left.

Oh and f*** bargain bin for not giving him a 1 or 2 year contract and getting alzner insead.

Top 5 is very debatable I’ll give you that but in 2008-2009 he was amazing. The problem with Marky is that he hit his prime around that year and got injured real bad the next years and basically missed 2 1/2 seasons when he was at his top.

Green, Gonchar and Phaneuf were great but Markov was better defensively and very similar offensively.

One guy was a solid defenceman at his peak. The other was a bona fide #1D, and among the better ones in the league at his peak. Which was also a pretty long peak. So...

Gonchar and Green had more points playing for powerhouse teams and let's be honest man, Mike Green was a disaster defensively and Gonchar was just marginally better. Phaneuf was so overrated and revealed his true colors. From 07-10, only Chara, Lidstrom, Pronger, Niedermayer (when he played) were consistently better than Markov. Dude should have been at least nominated for Norris in 07-08 and 08-09.

Leafs fan saying Markov AINEC. Kaberle was a good player in his own right but this one shouldn't be close.

That was a dark day when Bergy refused to give Markov the 2-year deal he was looking for. All he wanted was to hit 1000 games and retire a Hab - which he absolutely deserved.

Has to be Markov. Was a better player in his prime, and had significantly more longevity.

Even if you ignored the first phase of their careers and pretended they were equal age 20-34, at age 34 Kaberle was out of the league and Markov was beginning a 5 year run where he put up 203 points in 354 games, and played 24 minutes a night as a top pairing defenceman from age 34-38.
