This is a guy I hadn't heard much about at all but in one of the NHL scouts mock drafts he was taken fairly high.

So whats the deal with this kid? Seems to be a powerforward, has 4 fights this year and 48 PIMS in 21 games. Ive read he is a big hitter but is this kid the real deal?

What is his offensive potential? Is he mean, looking to put guys through the boards and a good fighter or not quite that mean?

Hes got size, I've seen him listed at 6'1

I'll defer to others but from everything I have read there is a somewhat limited ceiling offensively but does all the little things right. Sounds like he'll might be a 20 goal, 45-50 point 3rd line, perhaps 2nd center who kills penalties, has good wheels and can play a bit in all situations, will bang some bodies....a safer pick for someone in that 20-35 range who might see a little more upside in him offensively. I mostly hear positives about how he is a well rounded player.

im asking because im wondering if the oilers would consider him with their 31st pick. He has good size and decent numbers for U18NTDP

Currently leading Team USA in points at the WU18 tourny. Going to North Dakota next year. From an Ohio border town but played in Pittsburgh PA before NTDP. Has a younger brother coming through the same Hornets system.

Good size, grit and skill = "real deal" IMO.

Intriguing player. Was fantastic in the last two games of the U18 (only US games I saw), really doesn't quit around the net. Big centre, at least some offensive ability, had a big tourney...maybe goes a bit earlier than expected?

Red Line--per Kyle Woodlief's latest column in USA today has him ranked #10 overall...but
Red Line lists Miller a RW --not a centre---yet Central Scouting shows him as a centre --I thought he was at centre for Team Usa at the U-18's but he only took 20 faceoffs (and was 57%) in the 6GP by USA ---

SO we have questions as to him and 2 other guys as to whether they project as centres or wingers ( Zibanejad played LW not centre at the U-18's and Zack Phillips Saint Johm Sea Dogs QMJHL seems to be taking lots of face-offs (more than Huberdeau) indicating he is the centre
and Huberdeau the winger --which is a reversal of how most were categorizing them in posts on this forumn --remember that at the Top Prospects Game--Phhillips was at centre and Huberdeau at LW) ..

Anyway the centre vs. winger argument may be crucial for teams ranking these guys allvery relatively closely (after the consenus top 8,the 9-19 tier has many different opinions in rankings -but if the forwards in the 9-19 group are all that close then POSITION need--centre or winger could be crucial as to which forward in the 9-19 group goes to which teams ..

IN this sense if Miller is seen as a viable centre THEN he probably does go nearer 10 than 19because he would be the best "BIG" centre of that 9-19 group ...IF he is seen as a RW then others could go ahead of him ---both players projecting as centres(Zibnejad -if he is seen as a centre and Phillips, maybe Scheifele)or a bunch of other wingers other teams may prefer (Armia,Zibanejad maybe KUCHEROV moves up ) ..

One shjould also note that Central Scouting had Miller only at #23 NA skater i behind Tyler Biggs--but that was before the World U-19's..

Finally- a caution-while Miller really showed well at the U-18's-the reason he was in the 20's
only in NA skaters by Centrl Scouting was that he wasn;t that big a scorer for the USNDTP team playing in the USHL compared to other scorers from that league.
So the u-8's MAY "rise" him ona lot of scouts lists-but he had only 3 goals and 12 asssts in 21 GP for the USA team in the USHL --well back of Grimaldi amd Boucher ...
The knock on Miller was precisely his lack of scoring--so "caution" still may prevail as many teams willnot accept his "rise" as has Red Llne just because he shined at the U-18's..

They could have had him in less of a scoring role with the USHL and more of one in the U18's

I have no idea about the USHL, but at the U-18 they were talking like Boucher-Grimaldi-Miller was a loaded up 1st line put together just for that tourney. I did notice that both Grimaldi and Miller took draws, and both were quite good in the circle, Grimaldi being Rhanded and JT left handed made that a strength for that line.

??? for the American posters here: If Grimaldi and Miller were centering different lines in league play (USHL) who were their regular linemates???

I saw Miller at several tourneys in last two years and he always played as winger. At World U-18 champs Grimaldi centered first line with Boucher and Miller at wings.

As I suspected, JTM is a legit first round prospect. I'm glad to see ISS didn't hesitate in putting him all the way up at 16, despite not having him in the first round all season.
