Do we sign him and strengthen the Belleville experience - Brown, Norris, Chlapik pretty strong down the middle.
Or let him stay another year at Michigan.
I doubt he’d crack the Sens outright next year.
I’d like the first option. Let him learn to play with Formenton, Batherson et al

The Sens are currently at their max amount of contracts, they won't be able to sign Norris until later this offseason once they off load some contracts.

It is my understanding that they can sign him to a 19-20 ELC like they did with Gruden. A 19-20 contract won't count against the numbers for the 18-19 season.

There's no way for Norris to burn a year because his ELC is still eligible for a slide and there aren't 10 games left in the season for him to play. Meaning, signing a 19-20 ELC now instead of in the summer shouldn't be an issue if he has already decided he would like to turn pro.

The benefit of signing him now would be that he could sign an ATO with Belleville for the remainder of the season and participate in the (possible) playoff run.

I don't think he's quite healthy yet. Thought he had shoulder surgery recently?

I had not been following Norris that closely so you're probably right. That would obviously eliminate the prospect of an ATO.

I guess the take away would be that if they could still sign him to a contract right now despite being at the 50/50 limit because Norris would sign a 19-20 contract anyways due to being eligible for an ELC slide and the NHL season being almost over.

"It's disappointing to have my season end and I'm going to miss being on the ice with my teammates every day, but it's something that I have to take care of," said Norris. "I am looking forward to working hard during rehab and am excited to get back on the ice. I'm going to be here supporting my teammates throughout the rest of the season and wish them the best of luck."
Norris was having a breakout sophomore campaign, appearing in 17 games with 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists). His 10 goals are tied for a team high, and he ranks second in points behind classmate and World Junior teammate Quinn Hughes. Norris' 10 goals are tied for seventh most in the nation and third most in the Big Ten Conference.
"I feel bad for Josh. He was having an outstanding season," said head coach Mel Pearson. "Knowing him, he will work extremely hard to come back stronger and become an even better player. We look forward to having Josh continue to be a part of our team this season."

IMO Norris could become a very good centre or LWer for this org. He probably needs at least a yr in Belleville before we see him in Ottawa but he is another example of a hard working 200' player. And he adds really good competent depth to the team.

I think Ott could fill two or three positions from the 2019 draft & at least two or three more positions in the 2020 draft. If they are part of the 2020 lottery they would have a shot at Lafrenier or Byfield & should add a couple more good players.

Lafrenier - Brown - Batherson (2020 draft)
Tkachuk - White - Duclair
Formenton - Norris - Byfield (2020 draft)
Paul - Lavoie - Leason (2019 draft)

Lol, would be absolute homerun and a friking half. I'd be happy if he became mainstay on our 3rd line.

Would def be. No one expected Kesler to have the offensive impact that he did at his peak. Both had/have similar projections to each other prior to beginning their careers and possess a similar skill set/style of game. Kesler started as a 3rd line grinder/defensive specialist and steadily improved his offence with time. Wouldn’t count it out of Norris especially if he finds some sweet chemistry with Tkachuk.

I found PD’s response to Norris fairly passive.... we will try to sign him to play in Belleville. Not exactly a full endorsement to a D+2 first round pic. A US kid debating signing for Canada’s weakest team or waiting it out.

I was hoping for something along the lines of “we want him to come to camp and battle for a C or WING position”.

Why? That's the correct thing to say, especially with him not doing the usual 4 game cup of coffee at the end of the season due to injury.

There are no worries for Norris signing whatsoever, and he isn't ready for the NHL whatsoever. Belleville is the right spot if he leaves Michigan.

No need in him getting thrown to the wolves in the NHL.

What is his “wait and walk” scenario? One more year of college ? I agree he almost certainly isn’t ready... I’m just worried about loosing the asset. Is PD 100% certain he will sign?

No reason to think otherwise. He's coming off an injury. Dorion will tell him how many callups the Sens had this year and that if he starts in Belleville and does well he will definitely have his looks and chances with the big team. Its not unusual to start in the AHL. If he breaks down the door in training camp, which would be unexpected he could start in Ottawa.
