What do Flames need cap space for? They got the whole team signed.

Also, I don't see how trading an NHL player for an AHL player improves the depth

The Flames only have about 200K in space right now. It kinda handcuffs them should there be injuries or if they want to add at the deadline.

I also don't think Frolik is in the teams future plans (or at least he shouldnt be). Hes a UFA after this year. His position could be filled internally. The Flames have a small pool of forwards (Bennett, Mangiapane, Czarnik, Dube, Quine, etc) all jockeying for an opportunity.

I think Frolik is exactly the kind of player you move for a reclamation project like Ho-Sang. If you can add a potential elite offensive player for a somewhat diminishing asset, you consider it. Unless his character is truly as poor as is rumoured, then he’s at least worth looking at.
