20 million for a guy that's barely above replacement level has to be up there. I guess Chris Davis is worse, and arguably Tulowitzki, but AA only traded for Tulo's awful contract so he only gets part of the blame there.

Remember Tulo was traded so the Jays could get rid of the worse contract in baseball. Jose Reyes.

How is Martin barely above replacement? His 92 wRC+ is quite respectable for a catcher and his overall defensive value is fairly good as well, he's clocking in as pretty much a league average catcher this season. He's not value for money, but it isn't that bad a deal for the backend of a free agent contract.
92 WRC+ is below average, and his WAR is below 1. That's literally the definition of barely above replacement level.

Worst case scenario couldn't Donaldson be a DH next year in May when Guerrero Jr get recalled? It's pricey at 18 mil or whatever the qualifying price is but assuming Donaldson had a bounce back year (not to where he was but better than this terrible year) he'd be worth more than this. And wouldn't the comp pick be better than this as well if he signed elsewhere? Just seems like poor asset management by the Jays.

Donaldson wanted to stay too.... didn't care that the Blue Jays were going to rebuild... he loved the city. Too bad Shapiro is a moron and trades him for whats probably going to be nothing. First Price (although he's been average in Boston) then Edwin now Donaldson.... maybe one day they'll realize Shapiro has done a garbage job.

Once again, Shatkins strikes.

Donaldson has a bum shoulder and major calf issues over the past two seasons. If he really wanted to stat with the jays he wouldve taken a short term contract but he wanted 5+ years which is ridiculous for a soon to be 33 year old.

Paying big money/term to players on the wrong side of 30 is a losing strategy. Jays are already paying tulo 20 million to do nothing and yet you want them to throw away more money on aging players?

For his age he has very little service time due to being a late bloomer. He really only has 4 full seasons, another 2/3rds of a season, a half season and then this years lost season. Normally you wouldn't give someone his age that kind of length but A) He's arguably the best player in franchise history after Alomar and B) He doesn't have the wear tear most players his age have.

At the very least they could have kept him and waited to get a draft pick in free agency, instead they get whats going to amount to nothing. But whatever, people have come to expect this from the Shatkins duo.

Maybe we will hear confirmation in the following months as to whether the Blue Jays training staff mishandled/misdiagnosed Josh's calf injury. This could be a major reason for his disenchantment with the Jays organization.

AA could have handled a few things better but overall he brought this team back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in nearly a quarter century, including a 2015 that probably should have at least gone to the World Series were in not for some fortunate circumstances for the Royals.

All those moves were necessary for the Jays to become the legit playoff team they were for two years. The only prospect of any substance that has emerged from his deals has been oft-injured Noah Syndergaard. Pretty well all the others have developed into nothing of significant impact. If he had stayed pat, kept Syndergaard along with all the others, it is likely the jays would have been around .500 or lower from 2015/16 and the organization would have have the longest playoff drought in professional sports.

As for Martin, he has accumulated 7.7 war in just under 4 seasons on his 5 year/80 million contract. Not great value, but certainly not terrible let alone one of the worst contracts in pro baseball. In 89 games this season, he has 10 homeruns, and while his batting average is terrible, he has a respectable .338 OBP. He defense is still decent/above average as well. I suspect he will be splitting duties with Jansen next year along with a dose of Dhing and Pitch hitting.

Donaldson has plenty of wear and tear on him. He has always been the type that will age poorly due to the aggressive style he plays. He couldnt even throw to 1st base this spring and i expect that could be a lingering issue. He missed significant time the past two seasons as a result of calf injuries.

I dont think they wanted to offer him a qualifying offer because they fear jd might accept. I wouldnt be shocked if jd needs off season surgery and if he accepts the qualifer that leaves you on the hook for 18 million.

Do you think they just don't play baseball in the minors?

I can't believe too many people would honestly argue that.

Alomar
Halladay
Carter
Delgado
Tony Fernandez
Lloyd Moseby
Dave Steib
Bautista
Vernon Wells
Jimmy Key
Tom Henke

Possibly even George Bell, Jesse Barfield, and Encarnacion too

All of these guys contributed far more to the Jays than Donaldson, maybe you could say he had the best single season in Jays history but even that is questionable, Delgado had some monster years in the early 2000's

Donaldson was the driver of the bus that got them to back2back ALCS'... now personally i would put Joey Bats, Alomar, Halladay and Delgado ahead of him. Possibly Touch Em All Joe as well but after that i think he beats guys like Moseby and Wells.

Donaldson's agent is refuting a report that a contract offer was made by the Jays in the offseason......I think the story is that Shapiro/Atkins probably discussed numbers with JD's agent but never made a formal offer.

Probably for the best, after the abortion of a season he's had I don't think I'd want him for another three years at $25 mil per, which was the reported "offer".

Those guys definitely have longevity on their side, but none of them have the overall peak Donaldson did. Too bad for them it was very short-lived.

Bautista undoubtedly left a bigger mark on the franchise than Donaldson did. Without question.

Same could be said for Delgado, Halladay, Alomar and Carter.

Rosenthal wrote that the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Houston Astros — three teams on a playoff collision course with Donaldson and the Cleveland Indians, surprise, surprise — either voiced displeasure or asked for clarification from Major League Baseball on why the trade was allowed.

Apparently, opposing teams were just as confused as fans and media about how Donaldson, after weeks of non-updates, was suddenly able to get healthy enough to play a couple of rehab games in order to be traded before the Aug. 31 playoff eligibility deadline.

Interesting.

Boohoo. They traded for a guy that's not healthy enough to play yet. They're getting an unfair advantage!

Morons.

I dunno which guys you're talking about specifically but some of them have peaks similar to JD.
Donaldson already has a higher WAR than Bautista and is only 7 behind Delgado. Guys certainly left more of a mark wrt how the fans view them and on field team accomplishments, but few compare to his overall impact in such a short amount of time.

Leaving a mark doesn't mean being the better player, though. No one will likely ever top Joe Carter's moment and he was a sub 20 war player with a .771 lifetime ops. Donaldson likely won't be valued as high as most blue jays of the past due to nostalgia and the lack of a Carter/Bautista postseason moment.
