Or just Hextall trying to take the pressure off rookie centers Vorobyev and Frost.
All smoke and mirrors.

I think it's more about pumping up Weal. He had some stretches last season where looked like late 2016-2017 Weal, but didn't get the results.

I'm assuming Hexy had seen him a lot when he was younger and is hoping he can put it all together on a more consistent basis - just a complete hunch.

When you look at Weal's AHL performance, and his excellent 20+ game stretch the year before, it's understandable why Ron thinks he can play better than last season.
2014-15 73g 30-49 69 PO 19g 10-12 22
bounced between LA and Philly in 2015-16
2016-17 43g 15-32 47, Philly 23g 8-4 12

This is probably his last shot, but he'll get a long look in TC.
It's his job to lose, but he only has to about January, when Vorobyev, if he doesn't win a job in camp, should be ready to go.

I like him better at center, that's where he was most of his career, and his playmaking skills is what we need at 3C.
I don't think his upside is anymore than a marginal 3C, but I think he's more talented than Cousins.

What I like about Weal is that he is a really hard worker paired with above average hockey vision. He was protecting the puck well and taking a lot of punishment along the boards but can't make a living out of imitating Claude Giroux playing wing no matter how hard he tries.

Having Weal play center between Lindblom and Simmonds for a month or two before re-evaluating internal upgrade options would definitely not be the end of the world.

Meh...I don't think Weal had was it takes. I hope I'm wrong, but he seems like a waste of a roster spot

I was hoping he was traded for a 3rd before the draft. Would much rather go into the season with:

G - Coots - TK
JVR - Patrick - Jake
Lindblom - Frost - Simmonds
Raffl - Laughton - NAK

Pimp, Vecchione, Torgo, Mr. Ed

Vecchione is another guy I don't see much of a future with.

I think it's more likely that with Weal gone, Laughton would be the 3C and Lehtera would be the 4C.

IMO that’s the best way to make 4 good lines without Frost making the team. I’m fine with Vex over NAKs, as I think NAK prob has more to gain as 1LW with phantoms for the first few months, and Vex plays a 4th line game.

Is there a wowy site we could look at his numbers away from filppulas of the world?
Filppula was actually passable with Weal.

Am I reading this right? It appears to me that everyone except Laughton, Manning and Gudas faired better (based on shots) with Weal than without. If that is the case, that seems to heavily support that Weal should be in the lineup. Possibly what is missing is that he likely gets favorable matchups and zone starts and those players benefit from that, is that correct? I don't know that he actually does get favorable usage.

Sheltering shitty players doesn't make them any better so there might be something to this. Also corsi and other nerdstats don't tell the whole story. What good Reads nerd numbers are if he can't convert on his chances?

But we are looking at this the wrong way. True NHL coach doesn't look at how much others score with weal on the ice, but how much goals they give up with him out there.

Thanks MacD. He apparently helps with shots against as well. Again deployment may have something to do with that. I'd love to see him succeed but I was really dissapointed last year. Other than finishing, maybe it wasn't as bad as it seemed.

There's also fit, Weal is not a good fit on a checking line with Laughton.
Weal is probably not a great fit with Filppula at center.

Now with Lindblom and Simmonds, he's got some protection and guys who can score if he gets them the puck, and conversely, Lindblom can get him the puck near the net (Weal has a good feel for the open space 10-15' way) and Weal can shoot.

First couple months of the season is always a bit of a shakeout cruise, especially for the bottom six and bottom two pairs this year, top two lines and top pair should be set from the get go.

Weal is an advanced stats favorite, but he never seems to play up to his numbers.

In the same way some defensemen consistently give up fewer goals than their metrics would suggest, Weal consistently creates fewer net goals than his metrics would suggest.

Maybe he broke through in Montreal, though experience suggests it's a SSS like his 20 game stretch a couple years ago when it looked like he turned the corner.
