Interesting plan by the Giants to try him as a starter, does he have enough pitches to succeed in that role?
No. His velocity is also a concern. The Cardinals tried this in 2022. They made him take some heat off his pitches so he could pitch deeper into game. The results were pretty bad and his control issues really reared their head.

That being said i think the Giants are smarter than being given credit for here. They're going to open the season with two holes in their rotation. Robbie Ray is still recovering from UCL surgery and Alex Cobb had a hip procedure done in October. They can legitimately give Hicks a fair shake at a starting gig. If he fails, then you can send him to the bullpen because you gave him the chance and he showed he can't handle it.

11 million for Hicks as an upper end reliever isn't bad. And if you're the Giants you could build a pretty solid back end of the pen between him, Tyler Rogers and Doval to close out games given the whiplash level speed differentials.

If anything, he'll be used as an opener/3 inning swingman to start games. He will not be counted on to eat starts and go deep in games, that's obvious. it's a limited sample size, but when hes had to turn a lineup over, his stuff really deteroritates.

I expect the opener/swingman experiment to be short lived too
