Did any of the flames react to the hit? To me that hit looked late.
Yes, there was a scrum. There was one early after Donato kneed Gaudreau, too. The Flames and the Bruins both did a good job sticking up for each other.

Gaudreau's head is literally on the other side of his body when McAvoy is still half a second away, and he sees Gaudreau rotating the entire time he's closing. Could he have avoided hitting him at all? Probably not. But he could have easily avoided following through that strongly. Honestly the kid looked mad/embarrassed he got walked, and he put a little extra stank on a borderline hit.

Oh well. Gaudreau should be hearing warning bells as soon as he decided to stop on the goal line. He cared more about the puck and the scoring chance than his physical safety, that's his decision to ignore a potential threat. McAvoy appears to do his level best to deliver a legal hit, Gaudreau has a degree of responsibility in its outcome as well.

Doesnt seem malicious. Hockey's a fast sport. Sometimes things like this can happen.

It doesn't matter if there wasn't malicious intent. It's a forearm shiver to the head. It's a dangerous play and should be suspendable.

If this happened to Petterson or Boeser us Canucks fans would be livid.

Is McAvoy just supposed to try and chest bump him as hard as possible? He doesn't get his arm out prior to contact, it's tucked and right where you'd expect it to be. If Gaudreau isn't tiny and turning it's a total non-issue.

You mean he cared more about avoiding goalie interference than avoiding a hit from behind him? Watch the longer gifs; McAvoy starts going after Gaudreau when his back is turned, then continues through as he rotates with his head down. That's not his "level best to deliver a legal hit." That's an idiot taking his damaged ego out on someone in a dangerous manner.

Avoiding goalie interference? That's quite the reach.

Half a second.

If defensive players need to be 100% responsible for a hit until less than half a second until contact, why would anyone even bother taking the risk?

If Gaudreau doesn't elect to commit suicide by opening his body up away from the boards like that, McAvoy is on track for a shoulder to shoulder hit. Arm tucked until contact, tries to meet the body/chest of a smaller player, who is lowering his own center of gravity to begin accelerating towards the puck.

If Gaudreau bothered to get his head up instead of staring at the puck he could have protected himself 100%.

Always knew Gaudreau would get lit up.

That was a textbook hit. Not McAvoy's fault that Gaudreau is 5'9 and doesn't protect himself. If a player is skating with their head down then they're going to get hit in the head. That's not McAvoy's fault. He goes right through the body, Gaudreau's head being there is irrelevant. Hence the saying, keep your head up.

How about defensive players be responsible for not charging a guy whose back is turned, then following through while his head is down? You want stupid dangerous hockey, go back to the 90s. How the actual f*** is he supposed to "protect himself" from McAvoy as he's avoiding the f***ing net and goalie at the exact same time? But of course Gaudreau can magically avoid literally everything at once, while poor dumbshit McAvoy can't even let up on a single target as he derps toward him like a brain damaged goat.

Hit would have been behind him, maybe, if he hadn't chosen to meet it head on.

His back is not turned, he's nearly perpendicular to McAvoy. If Gaudreau doesn't stomp on the brakes you can't even guarantee that there's contact at all, it's as likely that McAvoy forces him into the corner or behind the net and leaves the puck for his partner to collect.

Gaudreau seals his own fate by admirably deciding to stay on the puck instead of a softer fly-by, but I don't think he expects McAvoy to be back in the play so quickly after leaving his feet and gets caught with his guard down.

Does McAvoy have any history of supplemental discipline in the NHL so far?

The problem with the hit is that it was late. Most Flames fans don't think this would have even been a penalty had the hit been earlier.

On track for a shoulder to shoulder hit yet somehow hits him in the head... didnt know JG magically grew 5 inches when he was looking for the loose puck...

Yeah, remember those Habs fans who called the cops on Chara?

Seriously though, this post is either top troll or insane-o. Well played.
