I know I've been a bit hard on Tavares before but it seems like John Tavares might finally have a season we've all been waiting for. Right now he's off to the best start of his career with 12+5=17 Points in 13 games. Here's a look at how John has performed in his first 13 games every season since he started:
2009-10 Tavares: 4+6=10 Points
2010-11 Tavares: 6+4=10 Points
2011-12 Tavares: 8+5=13 Points
2012-13 Tavares: 8+8=16 Points
2013-14 Tavares: 5+9=14 Points
2014-15 Tavares: 6+9=15 Points
2015-16 Tavares: 7+6=13 Points
2016-17 Tavares: 5+6=11 Points
2017-18 Tavares: 12+5=17 Points
As you can see were Tavares has really impressed is when it comes to goalscoring. 12 goals in just 13 games shows that Tavares has become more selfish in his play and is actively trying to score more instead of setting his team mates up. Tavares also has the least amount of assists in the last 6 seasons which would support that theory. If you look closely at the goals Tavares has scored this year, a lot of them have been tip ins were Tavares capitalizes on his linemates instead of the other way around like it used to be. One can clearly see that Tavares is playing for a new contract more than anything. Seeing Eichel swimming in Money despite not accomplishing anything impressive in the NHL yet has clearly motivated Tavares to get that big Money deal himself. He's finally playing with that firery latino passion that we all know he has but rarely shows. Personally I think part of the problem with Tavares all these years has been the contract that he's had. Tavares tried to take a "team friendly deal" and signed for 5.5 million per year when he could've gotten a lot more. Hard to motivate yourself to do your best in the long run when you know that a lot worse players are making 8+ million a year. But with a new contract on the horizon Tavares is finally living up to his OHL potential.
The only other time Tavares looked this good was in the lock out shortened season were he had a good start too with 8+8=16 Points in his first 13 games. But then he got gassed as the season went on because of the condensed Schedule and ended up losing the Hart Trophy to Ovechkin. I have a feeling that this might finally be the year when Tavares takes home his first Trophy. He's a good bet to win the Rocket Trophy with Ovechkin slowing down and Laine in a slump. So what do you guys think? Will this finally be the year were Tavares puts it all together and lives up to his potential. Will Tavares finally be able to win a Trophy this year? Is the new contract a motivation for him and is he planning on leaving the Islanders to get a better deal? Or is this just a hot start to the season and we shouldn't get our hopes up?
