Both keepers have been strong tonight.

McElhinney has gone fishing a few times in the game though. I think Sparks is more reliable.

McElhinney had good numbers last year but I don’t think the Leafs are prepared to lose a guy like Sparks on waivers for one year of an older goalie.

No one will pick McElhinney on waivers. It makes zero sense not to pick Sparks over McElhinney to start the season. If it doesn’t work out, you can always call him back up.

Great game from Tavares.
Marner and him will be magic.
Liked the Kadri line, thought both Leivo and Brown had good games.
Moore stood out with his energy and speed.

I know its just preseason and game 1 but I'm officially worried about Hainsey.

Vets don't really need to be graded in pre-season.

Oz was the best out of the defenders on trial.
Borgman and Holl were strong too.
Dermott was ok - shaky start but settled down as the same went on.

Up front:

- Leivo had a very solid game all around, very involved in the play
- Moore can skate. Good compete effort, did a lot of little things well
- Timashov was also strong in this game
- Grundstrom did some good things but didn't particularly stand out in any way

Other notes:

- McBackup and Sparks look dead even in the backup goalie tryout. They were both excellent.
- JT and Marner showing obvious chemistry is an excellent thing to see
