Sakic was named along guys like Chia and Bergervin. Even if he wasn't the worst, there is no doubt that for a while he was considered to be one of the worst.

Now over a year on, he completed one of the best trades ever trading a guy who wanted out in Duchene for a kings ransom. He has manged the cap well and put together a young, fast skilled team with a strong prospect pool.

Has he redeemed himself as a GM? Where does he rank now?

Slow down. Ottawa's 1st is looking like a prime asset, but there was no way to know it was going to be *that* good at the time. Still, the trade has definitely worked out.

As to whether he redeemed himself? Too early to tell. He's bought himself more runway.

People were just really overreacting then and are now eating a lot of crow for it.

Tbh generally holding on to a player like Sakic did is probably not ideal but it sure did work out for the Avs in this case. Sakic looks like a genius now but bending over a shit GM like Dorion will do that.

Please. Even if the pick was in the 20s the trade was still incredible for the Avs.

The Duchene deal was a masterpiece. An engineered three-team trade with two young quality NHL players in Girard and Kamenev along with several picks. That alone redeems him.

I mean, the 1st pick was the only real thing of value in that trade. A basic quality for quantity trade that worked out better than he could have ever dreamed of.

I have him between 22-28 range.

Drafted well, the ROR stuffs was a gong show but Duchene trade was perfect. He's above average as a GM.

It's not just the Duchene trade. ROR trade worked out really well for the Avs, and a lot of people liked his use of cap room to get Grubauer. Avs have also drafted well in the past 4 years.

The Avs are also one of only a few teams that can say they have zero bad contracts right now.

A bad GM can always pull off an OK trade (Duchene) once in a blue moon.
an ok trade? he got a bundle of picks including, an unprotected 1st, 2 legit prospects (which included one being 5 months removed from a 1st round selection in Bowers) and a Dman who stepped into their roster right away and should be in a top 4 role this year in Girard.

This was for a player that everyone & their grandmom knew was on the market, and had been for a while. Not to mention the team improved dramatically compared to the year prior w/o him

Lol @ ok.

Safe to say that you should never judge a GM based upon a short resume, or a trade based upon how it looks immediately afterwards.

Sakic got a lot of flak for things Roy did. Roy was his decision and he gave him too much runway, but still unfair to blame him entirely.

Funny how easy fans can forget a good/bad GM.
Sakic was subpar. Bottom 10 GM.
Sakic makes a killer trade. Top 10 GM.
