Dater thinks Macfarland will be GM sooner than later with Sakic becoming president. I wonder if that's a surprise part of the press conference next week introducing Bednar?

You know they'd never announce that, it would just happen on the website. And yeah I think that makes a lot of sense that will eventually happen.

Hold on. Sakic is going to be the President? Or is he already? I thought he was the VP? Did I miss something here?

Edit.....

I think I figured out what was confusing me. Did you mean to say "and Sakic will become president" instead of "with Sakic becoming president"?

Something that stuck me while listening to both Sakic interviews: the conference call and the one he was alone with Vic, Kyle and Julie. In the first one is was using mostly 'we" but in the second I don't remember him saying it even once. He was always saying "I". It sounded like he was going out of his way to stress that it was his hire. I'm sure he had lots of input/help from MacFarland and others but I think he wanted to show people that it is now his team and his alone. I'm really happy to hear that. He is taking sole responsibility of this hire and if it goes bad he is willing to take the blame alone as well. Except for a few mistakes early on in his tenure I think he has done a great job so far. These mistakes has not hindered the team very much either, the worst one probably being Stuart.

I think will see MacFarland take over the GM duties in the near future and I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. Although I think I will like MacFarland I would also like to see how far Sakic can take this team before relinquishing those duties.

Anyone else notice Joe looked a little more rested and healthy today. It has hurt to see him look so worn lately. Ever since he was inducted to the HHOF he's just looked exhausted. Either he has some good face cream or things are going well but he looks better than he has.

They finally let him break the glass encasing his old locker.

So, with the roster finally complete (most likely), how did Sakic do this offseason? I think he did a great job improving the roster and staff, especially our depth and AHL squad.

NHL Forwards:
(Top6 Wing) Boedker/Tanguay.........R. Bourque (loss; probably isn't coming close to 40)
(Wing/Center) Matthias/Wagner.......Colborne (Win; should be more productive and be able to play top6)
(Wing) Skille.................................G. Bourque (Win; versatility and production)

RFA Forwards:
Everberg..........Elson (Loss)
Smith/Beck.......Compher (Win; legit prospect, should be just as good in AHL)
Hishon.............Grimaldi (Win; younger, better skater, better attitude, tougher)
Rendulic...........Petryk (Win; 2way play)
Cheek..............Greer (Win)
Muers..............Nantel (Win)

UFA Forwards:
Street...........Sislo (Toss Up; leadership, 2way)
Agozzino.......Whitney (Win; leadership, offensive consistency, knows role)
Cliche...........O'Brien (Win; leadership and offensive ability)
Bordy............Vogelhuber (Win)
Winchester.....B. Smith(Win)

NHL(ish) Defensemen:
Holden.........Tyutin (Win; need the DZ play and leadership)
Redmond......Gelinas (Win; better season, RFA with potential)
Bodnarchuk...Stanton (Win; appears to have done OK in Van, seems willing to be AHL vet)

RFA Defensemen:
Gormley.......Wiercioch (Win; proven a lot more, similar players)
Beaupre.......Boikov (Win)

UFA Defensemen:
Noreau........??????
Guinen........??????
Stuart.........Lindholm (Win; LTIR NHLer turned prospect)

Goalies:
Berra.........J. Smith (Win; cheaper, knows role)
Will............?????
Sami..........?????

Coaching:
Roy.............Bednar (???; I really like Bednar)
Pratt...........Farrish (Win; Farrish's shot blocking ideology is too old school)
Dean...........Vielleux (Win; Chenoweth sucked, anyone would be better)

If only we could have kept Boedker and convinced Noreau and Everberg to stay in SA.

Interesting to see it written out like that. Interesting thing with the contracts is has islet ECHLers aren't taking up NHL contracts like Cheek, Meurs, Beaupre, Will. That's where our extra contract space came from.

Who would you rather have? Obviously some of these guys might suck just as bad as the last group, but they appear to be a little more promising on paper compared to who we had before.

Like I said though, it's SA that I think they did a really good in upgrading. At the NHL level, it's going to be more about the core, the youngsters and Bednar's impact than these role player signings.

The Avs used so many crap defenseman the last couple years, it's tough to compare guys to one another.

The only guy that stands out to me as a direct replacement is Wiercioch replacing Holden. Except it's more like he replaced the role Holden should have been playing on the 3rd pairing, because in reality it's Zadorov that looks to be replacing the top 4 role Holden had.

After that, I'd say Tyutin kinda replaced Guenin and Staurt's #6 defensive D/PK role.

Then there's Gelinas replacing Redmond's #7 offensive D/PP role.

Then the depth guys seem to be Siemens, Bigras, and Stanton replacing former depth guys Bodnarchuk, Gormley, and Noreau.

The matching isn't important really. I was trying to take role, position and age into account. Lots of guys could be switched around. Just focus on the upgrade/downgrade.

I'm trying to look at it as a who has come in to the org compared to who is out than how the 23 man roster is effected with everyone in their new roles. Bigras, Siemens and Zadorov didn't replace anyone. They just might have higher roles. While that (how the roles changed from last year) would be a good discussion that's not really what I was going for. I just feel like Sakic did a really good job replacing everyone this off-season.

Just FYI, I was thinking:
Bodnarchuk/Stanton - UFAs, depth Dmen, more on defensive side but still with some skill
Gormley/Wiercioch - older RFAs, PP/puck movers, 2nd chance reclamation projects
Beaupre/Boikov - pure prospects
Redmond/Gelinas - PP specialists, depth/3rd pair, big difference is age
Holden/Tyutin - UFAs, 3rd pair (or should be), Holden was even typically used as the defensive guy of his pair
Stuart/Lindholm - Lindholm didn't fit anyone left really since Beaupre was the only ELC let go, so went with the guy who didn't play at all (let's hope we don't have a comparible for Not playing at all)

Guinen only played 32 games in NHL last year and ended the year in SA. I see him more as a AHL vet who never should have been in an NHL role to begin with, for all that damn time. And Stanton is the only UFA AHL vet we brought in, but because of style he seemed like a better comparison to Bchuk.

Noreau, as an offensive, PP puck mover who was a UFA AHL vet didn't have really anyone similar brought in.

I see your point. I think Sakic did an ok job. I'll have to wait until around the mid point of the season to really evaluate it though. I'm still fairly worried about guys like Tyutin, Gelinas, and Wiercioch. They may be upgrades over their respective counterparts, but I'm not really sure by how much.

The biggest upgrade by far is Zadorov in the top 4 full time. That gives them an actual top 4 for the first time in forever. They have two decent pairings, and a steady defensive presence to help Barrie. The rest is kind of upgraded by trickle down effect.

Since I may not be able to monitor this to see when it gets to 1000, I'm gonna go ahead and make the new thread early.

Mods, can you sticky the new thread when you have a chance please?
