McDonagh was playing great at the beginning of the year and got a lot of recognition that carried on through the year though. And other than Barrie, there weren't any notable years for defensemen among those 9 teams other than those 4 with votes. Doughty had a bad year, the Ducks D sucked, Schmidt missed time, etc. There's definitely an Eastern slant, but with the amount of media these days I think it's rare for anyone to be overlooked

Yeah, it was a bit of a perfect storm this year, no doubt, but it just made the trend even more pronounced than usual. I may also still be bitter about Mack losing the Hart to Hall. And Varly losing the Vezina to Rask. And Duchene losing the Calder to Myers. Plus, all the Eastern Conference teams taking the top 3 picks that should rightfully be ours (not that I'm complaining about Makar).
