I work for the O.P.P. in a Provincial Communications Centre (Dispatch/911) and we're always hiring. I'm civilian.

Here's the link: http://www.opp.ca/ecms/index.php?id=286

Pros:
  • $28.50/hour starting
  • I'm 13 years in and I'm at $86k/year
  • Interesting (and difficult) job
  • Cool people, good work environment
  • 12 hour shifts, so only work 13-14 days a month
  • We hire both bilingual and english-only peeps

Cons:
  • It's in Smiths Falls
  • Crazy hours (dayshifts -> 07:00 to 19:00 and nights -> 19:00 to 07:00)
  • Have to work weekends/stats/xmas if your scheduled

If you have any questions, lemme know.

That's damn good money, especially for Smith Falls/Lanark County area. Wish I had known about this five years ago.

Yeap, it's a definitely competitive wage. It's a great job - I'm still really satisfied with it, especially from helping people get out of crazy situations.

Also noticed that there's four other locations around Ontario. Might be of interest to folks I know that are in those areas and having a ahrd time finding employment that doesn't suck.

This might not apply to all departments.

At least in certain department:

Manager is MG 06, which is equivalent to CS-04.

CS-03 is team lead or technical specialist.

Most people start full time French training when they become Manager (a.k.a French becomes a requirement at the Director level)

Unfortunately this is inaccurate in for the three departments I've worked in, a CS-03 was considered a manager and had to know French. There are tales of the white unicorn known as a "technical" CS-03 or CS-04, but these are only whispered about and never truly seen in most departments. The language police in the staffing office would never want them to be to common place, for what reasons I leave that to you to decide...

Bottom line is the government can't keep good technical people due to their ridiculous language requirements for technical fields. Wonder why the .gov websites suck so much, wonder no more. And wonder why they spend so much on consultants, same answer.
