Well that issue is resolved

Wonder how soon they turn to him should Lance struggle
So Lance is going to be looking over his shoulder.

I can understand this deal from Jimmy’s POV. At this point in training camp it’s way too late to go to a new team and pick up the offence and be the game 1 starter ready to roll with the full playbook at his disposal.

He would get cut and scramble to find a contract. This is probably a bit lower than what he would get on the open market. But by staying with SF he conserves the tape on him and prevents bad performances on a new team. He assures himself not getting tagged or traded.

He’s also got $100 on this contract anyways so setting himself up for 2023 off season on the open market.

I personally like it for Jimmy

Money, and direct to free agency, and a chance to win this season.
If he doesn’t play because Lance plays well then at least he doesn’t end up in a bad situation or team and put up poor numbers heading into free agency. Sacrificed some money this season and hoping to cash in next off season. Smart call.

Works for the team and the player.

49ers have a SB roster with a questionable iOL. QB injuries will happen. 2 > 1.

For Jimmy back to a system where he fits well. If Lance excels Jimmy can be traded to a team that loses a QB mid-season. NTC gives Jimmy the option to choose where/if he wants to go. Reduced salary makes a trade feasible.

Probably doesn’t make sense for Jimmy to accept a mid season trade. QB has to learn a new playbook. And no real time to gel with new WR and offence. He’d be better served just riding out the rest of the season as a backup to Lance than risk going somewhere else and not performing well. Recency bias and all heading into free agency in 2023.

Miami if Tua flames out or his hurt and he can play in McDaniel's system.

Jets playing under LaFleur's offense and maybe helps salvages Saleh's job.

Staying in SF makes most sense as Lance is likely to get hurt at some point.

If Kyle Wilson can’t perform I don’t think Jimmy G is going to save anyone. They’ve banked a lot on that kid. AFC is brutal to come in and get up to speed and make the PO. If they were in the nfc Jimmy would have a shot at guiding them to the PO but the Jets are in the afc. I think Miami has the better roster and the more recent coach.

McDaniel and Miami are the only legit possibility for him to go and feel comfortable.

Lance won’t be looking over his shoulders. Jimmy signed this because he wouldn’t have gotten a better deal for 1 season. He’ll get paid somewhere next year.

If Lance struggles badly then SF will put Jimmy in. NFC is weak so barring them beating the Rams for the top spot finishing in any of the WC1-3 doesn’t really matter in the end.

Jimmy buys time. Hasn’t practiced with the SF first team. Market for his services not good in terms of quality of the teams. Best to save his health and remain healthy for next off season.

It takes QBs time to learn the playbook.

There’s maybe like 2 spots where he can go and be ready to start within 2 weeks. Like Miami since it’s his old run game coordinator.

Key for Jimmy is the long game. All about 2023 off season. Not going to join a average to bad team during the season. If a team can’t held his stock no reason for him to accept a trade there.
