Canucks cap management is fine.

Right now, they are roughly 2 million over the cap with 26 roster players. Demoting 2 fringe players gets them under the cap. Plus they can move Roussel to LTIR if they need cap relief

For next season, they currently have $17M in cap with 16 players signed. Notable free agents are Tanev, Stecher, Markstrom and Virtanen. It's a bit tight, but manageable

Pettersson and Hughes have 2 more years left until RFA. At that time, Edler, Sutter, Pearson & Baertchi come off the books, freeing up $17M in cap space.

When Boeser's contract is up, Luongo's $3M cap recapture penalty and Eriksson $6M hit come off the books.

Based on those numbers, there's enough room to pay the top players and should leave enough to fill the roster with players on ELC's or depth players making < $2M.

By that logic we only got three players on the team when Boeser's contract is up - so you are right no cap issues.

Truly remarkable that we are not in a position to take advantage of good teams running into cap trouble. That is a much bigger issue than trying to keep the current team together - because why would you want that?

Right now we are just #"%"%# away the "cheap" years on EP, Horvat and Boeser - possibly also Hughes.

Forget taking advantage of good teams in cap trouble. We had the chance to do that with Tampa and instead Benning was dumb enough to pay above full price for JT Miller. The Canucks are a bad team that other teams can take advantage of be Susan the Canucks are in cap trouble now.

It’s hilarious how brutally mismanaged this team has been, yet how some people can’t see that.

WHAT THE...???

Did you entirely miss this past draft where teams that had well-managed caps were able to trade cap space for 1st round picks, whereas the Canucks are now in a position of having to sit out on taking players and having to (according to Friedman) look at making trades to free up cap space?

Under Benning's "re-build" we've incomprehensibly been a net loser of draft picks, and by screwing up our cap in asinine ways he couldn't even take the opportunity to pick up picks in trades in exchange for cap relief.

Just unbelievable. "Fine"

Instead, we're going to have to play things really tight just to hold on to a roster of a bottom-feeding team.

Just unbelievable. "Fine"

13. Teams trying to move bodies include Carolina and Vancouver. Both are tight to the cap and roster limits. The Canucks have made four or five players available, but I’m not sure Jake Virtanen is one of them. Head coach Travis Green was frustrated with Nikolay Goldobin last season, but GM Jim Benning opted for a longer view. Could be the same here. Calgary may have to manoeuvre something once Matthew Tkachuk is signed.

I see a lot of people including analysts say we will be able lock up our stars no problem. The big issue is that team will not be a contender unless we have legit stars or superstars on ELC's when we sign all of our big four in long term contracts.

Hence why it's so important to keep the drafting at an elite level and not trade your 1st rounders just to make the playoffs.
