Pretty awesome. I caught about 20 minutes of one of the practices recently at the Iceplex and watching the players up close running through drills I was really struck by the sheer otherworldly physical abilities ALL the guys who get to the NHL have. I was watching Scheif and another player taking one-timers. Scheif was standing by the board just in front of the goal line and winging passes to the other guy across the ice near the other boards who would then blast a one-timer at the net. One of his shots missed the top left corner and hit the glass behind the net and careened around at high speed to where MS was standing and without turning, he lifts his stick behind him and traps the careening puck off the glass, drops it back down in front of him and passes it back across the ice. It took me a second to realize what he'd just done it happened so smoothly. it wasn't so much the fact that he'd done this really quite difficult thing (I mean the puck was really moving!) but the casualness of it. If I'd done it I would be all "did you SEE what I just did??!" For him it was more like "yeah I don't feel like reaching four feet over to get a fresh puck so I'm just going to catch this one blasting around the boards here behind me and use it instead."

I know this is probably stepping beyond the bounderies of just being a regular poster around here. so I will take the wrath as required, but I am pleading on behalf of all the posters new and old on this Jets board can we all please stay out of other teams GDT's and PGT's.
Or at the very least not, post about it here.
Last year had nights turn very ugly and I am sure the mod's were ready to explode with the crap that was happening (just look what happened in the pre game thread yesterday), and it doesnt make these threads very enjoyable to read.
It has been bad enough with allot of people from our own board (myself included) sniping each other in recent weeks!

Lets try and enjoy this thread! Especially when the Jets win 5-0 tonight ;)

oh yeah I forgot

[glow=blue]GO :jets GO[/glow]

I wouldn't say don't go into other team's GDT's and PGT's. I would say be respectful. Remember that is their board, they can bash us (within reason) as much as they want. Don't go there to troll them, flame them or defend the Jets. It's possible to visit and have a nice discussion.

Just as when they come here the same is expected. If you see something that breaks the rules, DO NOT respond (here or there). Use the report post function. Otherwise you might be the one getting an infraction. If someone says something that you don't like but is within the rules? Suck it up, buttercup. :D

Here is something that hasn't been much publicized.

The entire long weekend that the Jets just spent in Banff was in-part coordinated/planned/facilitated by the Jets sports psychologist John Phelan. He is a specialist in Organizational Behaviour, joined the team part way through last season, and this will be his first full season working with them. I've seen a few lectures given by him and would suggest that the Jets are going to be a whole different animal than we saw the past two years. I even noticed a bit of a different tone to the player exit interviews taken yesterday; these guys are all business now. They aren't just talking the usual talk but rather are saying the sort of things that need backup by a demonstrated level of personal accountability at all times. That isn't a coincidence but rather is an extension of a new culture the team is working to instill from within.
I really think this will be the year that they start to turn the corner. It begins tonight.

I do like the fact that they all bought into being responsible to their teammates - it shouldn't always be up to the coaching staff to mentor, nag, and motivate. Many times, it's a much more powerful message when it comes from your co-workers, or in this case, your teammates. Good to hear.

Go :jets Go!

You guys have both touched on THE key point/theme for this season. I believe that while many posters and media types have been waiting for the "BIG" roster move trade/acquisition to vault our team onto the parade floats Chevy has quietly gone about re-engineering the locker room chemistry. I believe most (perhaps not all) of the subtractions since spring were designed to change the team chemistry and drive ownership and accountability from the board room and coaching staff to the locker room and players.

Here is the rub and it goes back to a keynote I heard Chevy do in the spring of 2012 at the chamber of commerce lunch. He said "The culture of and organization and a team can be defined, aspired to, and agreed upon but it takes time to move it into the action stage" he went on to say "it takes time to get the chemistry right in the locker room and to get group bye in"...."despite what you say it is much tougher to say than do". Kevin said "based on his experience though once it does begin to happen and you have the collective group bye in the change becomes noticeable" Chevy said every championship team he has been a part of (6 and counting) you could feel it in the locker room before it became apparent on the ice.

While everyone becomes fixated on the wins and losses this season I will be focusing more on the consistency of effort. EVERY NHL TEAM has good games and bad games, winning streaks and dry spells, but the good teams manage their effort levels better than the Jets have the last two season.

I have no idea how the year will end up but this is the first time in two years Chevy has publically handed ownership to the dressing room. My belief is he feels "he" has given them right players now and removed the bye in obstacles and it's time for the team to show us what the Jets 2.0 are all about.

I LOVE this post. Very well said. We all look at the black and white stats, but at the end of the day, what really pissed me off about this team, especially last spring, was the lack of effort and battle at times when it mattered most. I think that we will either see a guy like Byfuglien be more consistently engaged this year, or he will be traded. Time to put up or shut up.

I too will be watching how the team battles game to game and handles adversity.

I'm very interested to see how the Jets perform this season.

Guys like Kane, Little, Bogosian, Enstrom & Pavelic are now entering their prime.

Goals from Frolik (shorthanded) Byfuglien, Ladd and Setoguchi. Powerplay will go 0 for:help:

Oilers scores come from Yakupov and Ference.

I'd go with Mark.
Better position to succeed. Playing with Kane he should rack up points.
Mark us also more physically mature so I think he can hold up better over 82 games.

Either way, good problem to have.

If Jacob gets to spend any time with Buff he will have plenty of opportunities to strut his stuff and showcase his skating ability and skill at breaking up odd man rushes.

Damn. I hope this is the case. It definitely sounds similar to situations I've witnessed in the past. We still need more talent, but if the team shows it can improve the compete level a LOT this year that in itself will be an improvement. Regardless of our final spot in the standings.

Great post and I agree with Jet as well regarding the effort level. Honestly, if the team goes through dry spells but they are giving their all, I'm a happy fan. All I want is an honest effort night in and night out. What drove me crazy the last couple of years weren't the losses, but lackadaisical play and lack of urgency on the part of some players.

I know that successful sports stars/teams use sports psychologists as another tool in their box to provide that extra intangible that is required when your competition is so .... well, competitive. I'm very happy to see this.

As far as the Calder goes if Mark spends allot of time between Kane and Seto or Frolik he will be well positioned to be in the Calder hunt. A centre with a pulse playing between those two and with 2nd unit PP time should be able to back into 40 points.

Trouba on the other hand would need a miracle year to win the award. I do agree the spotlight (hype train) is on him and he is a talented kid but D don't win this award and the outlier Myers had 48 points for Buffalo in his rookie year (are you kidding me :handclap:). Barring our usual injuries to the top 4 D core Jacob may not get the PP time necessary to put up Calder numbers and don't kid yourself it is all about the numbers.

My stretch goal dream is for Mark and Jacob to both earn their way onto the short list......top 5. If that happens our team could be in pretty good shape this year.

Despite all of this WINS and LOSSES are the way to JUDGE how often the Jets are buying in. If the Jets were so very bad at managing their "effort level" the past few years, if they improve at that should they not then MAKE playoffs? What's the point of being more consistent if your just being more consistently worse?

This is pro sports. For all the talk of character, effort level, etc it comes down to one thing. Winning. The Jets need more of it. Great that Chevy maybe has "his team" now, but now they need to show it.

Just FYI, I am not the one waiting for the "big" roster move. Jets have never been there. I have been advocating simply that this Jets core has not come close to the standards that are neccessary for pro sports. I do not see guys like Antropov and Hainsey holding back the rest of the core. Quite simply if you look at the historical comparaisons, Jets look more like Columbus and Florida type rebuilds (ie one playoff round one season then another rebuild) than they do a Los Angeles, Chicago, Pittsburgh.

I 100% agree that the talent level will need improvement. That is definitely an indispensable part of any eventual championship equation but short term I would love to see a noticeable step forward in our team identity.

Though I agree with your post in many ways, ps, I agree with Holden more.

Consistent effort and holding one another accountable is one thing, but I find some of our core players play too selfish a game, and have not bought into a cohesive 'team' style of play. Might be why this team seems to not have an identity.

I'll be looking at how Buff and Kane play, to see how bought in they are. Kane seems to be buying in more, but I have not yet seen a dramatic difference with Buff. Its very hard to preach a style of play, when some of your core does whatever they want.

Further to Holden's point about the core, and I agree. Some of our core players - Ladd, Buff, Wheeler, Seto, Frolik - have been good supporting players on other teams, but replaceable parts. Our young, drafted, homegrown core - Bogo, Kane, Scheifele (?), Trouba (?) - are still developing, and may turn into significant core pieces of a winning team down the road. So building a winner through the draft is key, but you likely don't get real game-changer players without picking pretty high - top 4 or so.

I like Trouba. He looks like he can be a significant core piece down the road. Jury is still out on Scheif, for me. So lots of supporting pieces, but we lack enough non-supporting core guys that will lead this team.

Chicago can 'rebuild' and win again because of their key core of Toews, Kane, Keith and Seabrook. Add Sharp and Hossa, and that team can win year in and year out, regardless of who the supporting cast is, for the most part.

4-2 Jets.

As someone who has hated the Oilers from the Smythe division days, it brings me great pleasure knowing that it was current Jets captain Andrew Ladd who plowed into Dwayne Roloson in game 1 of the SCF, inevitably crushing the fairy tale that was the cinderella Oilers 2006 cup run. Its also been fun to watch Steve Tambellini drive that pumpkin carriage down the Anthony Henday into last place every year, fueled entirely by the tears of ex-coaches, Ryan Smyth departure announcements, and Robbie Schremps dad.

Kevin Lowe's been trying to find a fit for Pronger's glass slipper with Sheldon Souray, Ryan Whitney, Andy Sutton and Cam Barker, with predictable results, especially if you were predicting "first overall draft picks" or guessed that there'd be more 'Oil Change' mini-series than Police Academy movies. The only thing better than a prolonged period of failure and disgrace would be if hypothetically speaking, 15 years earlier, the citizenry were humble enough to label themselves the "City of Champions".
