Hiding under WTG's bed...
Edler isn’t contributing as much offensively at this point in his career but he’s a rock defensively. Have no complaints at all with him in the lineup used in a defensive roll.

What’s inspiring about Edler is that he was a dumpster fire defensively at certain times in his career during his 20s but has turned into one of the more reliable defensive defenders in the league in his 30s (not on Tanev’s level but a tier below). Gives hope that young guys like Hughes and Juolevi can learn and thrive in the defensive end as they mature.
Largely when he was paired up with Bieksa. Man, what a nightmare pairing. Yet coaches who've won the Jack Adams trophy never failed to try out that awful combo. For whatever reason, apart, these two guys at their peak were legit top 4 guys. But together? The goalie would see more rubber than a two dollar escort when the navy comes to town.

That might be going too far and writing a cheque he can’t cash but I hope he just keeps doing what he’s doing. He can’t pull a Marchand, this team doesn’t have Chara, Lucic, mcquaid, Thornton etc etc to make sure he doesn’t have to step up.

I think the team has to dress Macewan, not that he’s a deterrent but he could step up and end it.

I like Hogs showing his nasty side. Being vicious will create more space. We need more guys who play nasty. We are a soft team.

I always liked "that goalie has seen more rubber than a dead skunk on the trans Canada hwy" but that one ^^^ just became my go to goalie being shelled comment.

And we were already lucky that Dubois wasn't in the lineup either.
Exactly....when Dubois is back and fully integrated into the lineup, the Jets will leave the Canucks in their dust in this division.

In fact it's looking more and more to me that barring any sort of miracle run by the bottom-feeders, the four playoff teams in the North will be the Leafs, Habs, Jets and Oilers. They could almost end the season tomorrow.

I pick the Flames to miss for one reason. In all there years in VanCity, Markstrom and Tanev only led the Canucks to the playoffs once, and that was last season in the bizarre COVID season where everybody with a pulse made the playoffs. Something's missing in this Calgary core and their core is starting to get older.

0-11 after giving up the first goal. Not once have they battled back. So make any excuse you want. Is it always a brick wall goalie? Always bad luck?
Not once.

Breaking News: Most teams lose after giving up the first goal. Given that the Canucks are a below-average team, they're going to lose even more often.

I'm more concerned with the process and battle level. They pushed back and took control of the game. I mean, I guess you probably had your eyes closed the entire game.

If you want to be deliberatively obtuse, then by all means go for it.

Canucks didn't finish their chances but I thought they played a solid game except for the last 12 minutes or so of the first period. Team has been much better in the last six games but only earned five points due to lack of scoring and a couple of important goals against that resulted from unusual misfortune.

Zero for eleven after giving up the first goal isn't some stat you brush away.

All this talk about Edler. I would not mind resigning him to a 1 year deal, 2.5M or less.

me too, but with two caveats. one, that we have four guys ahead of him in the depth chart (or, say, two LDs) and two, that we have a coach that can control himself from playing edler more than 18-20 with 20 being the absolute max.

not super optimistic about either of those being in place.

There is no reason why Edler should sign for $2.5M or anything close to it. He is still a solid player.
Next season how does our top four look?
Hughes Myers
OJ Schmidt
I’d keep Benn (at 1.5 or less on a one year deal) to play with Bone in our bottom pair.
It’s time to move on from Edler, unless he accepts a very team friendly contract. (3 or less for one year.)

I would settle with Hughes, Juolevi, Edler on the left side ONLY if the Canucks can find a legit top4 right-side Dman. Leave Myers on the third pairing, and have Schmidt and a new top4 right side guy play on the top two pairing. However there isn't a ton of top 4 right shot dmen coming to the UFA market this off season. The only one i see is Dougie Hamilton. However he's maybe over-kill. He's a legit top pairing, number 1 guy. He'll command $7.5MM - $8.0MM. Unless we can off-load Eriksson, we are in cap troubles so he's not an option.
Essentially, i don't expect a major upgrade next season :(
Imagine if we could some-how land Hamilton though. That would be insaaane, what an ideal partner for Hughes

Juolevi hasn't played at anywhere near the level required to pencil him into the top 4. He figures to be in a battle with Rathbone in training camp. And based on how Edler's played since signing his current contract I don't see why he should sign for anything like $2.5M-$3M next season unless he craters from here onward.

We suck with an aging, and regressing Edler. It’s time to move on, and play younger guys who will improve with minutes played, and not regress. But, if Edler will take a one year deal at no more than 3 I could see value in keeping him.

Although the rule should - and ultimately will - be changed to involve any kind of head contact.

But that day is a long way off. As it stands right now, it's a legal hit and that was obvious from the moment it occurred.

And if they really want to stop damage, reduce fighting. Its the only team sport stupid enough to allow it, and only in N america.

Sarcasm isn’t your thing huh? Of course I was kidding about being level headed. I’m an idiot! 70% of the board has muted me, and I’ve been spewing negativity for 15 years on here.

that said, I keep coming back , game in... and game out. Glutton for punishment.

as for the flames / oilers fan comment, that’s low hanging fruit. Be witty if you wanna crack on me, I appreciate being ripped if you put thought behind it. 15,000 posts and ALL in Canucks board. ZERO in any other board...
For once I agree with Johnny Canucker!
