Nice to see Petry giving some praise to the General.

Stu Cowan: Canadiens' Petry tips cap to former teammate Markov | Montreal Gazette

I do see a few similarities in their game and he's right about Markov's deceptive ability. It was one of the best in the league.

Markov was so good. It's too bad that he ran into a glut of injuries during his prime.

Whoever played with markov was always better for it. I don't recall Petry being paired with him, but it looks like he did rub off a little bit on him regardless.

Oof, Marky was better than Petry by a fair margin.
"Fair Margin"? Eh, I'd say not really. I won't debate that he was better overall, but other than the position they play, it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges.

Markov:
Smarter
Great Passer
PP QB
Shootout specialist :sarcasm:

Petry:
Better shot
Physical
More mobile (especially in the later years)

Markov was also much steadier on D
Also... better shot? Do you mean shooting very hard into the boards?

Markov's shot wasn't the greatest. He kept it nice and low, which was good, but he was rarely the trigger guy bombing away for goals.

He had a good wrist shot dropping into the seam on the PP, but Petry has that also.

Markov scored at a better GPG over his 1000 games career than my name Jeff did over 700, Id say he has the edge on goalscoring too, pretty easily.

I agree that Markov was easily the more consistent defensemen over his career.

Petry has become a different player the last few seasons. This season he's taken it up another notch. You can basically split his career in two parts. Before the age of 30 and after the age of 30. Not the same player at all.

And he's still not as good as Markov, which is more of about how good Markov was than Petry being bad.

I don't think players do mind wearing an "A" or not.
Of course they ‘mind’
It’s an honor and a privilege for a professional hockey player to wear a letter on their jersey. I’m not suggesting it’s a huge deal or that Petry is bothered by it, but it’s embarrassing nonetheless.

I would argue that this season he's been Markov good...but it's been 12 games. Markov did that for 990 games.

Jeff's brain finally caught up with his talent/skill set. That was always his problem

He really hasn't though, i can't agree. I think people forgot how dominant Markov (And Subban) were at the height of their career.

Let's agree to disagree on that one...Petry has been lights out this season for us. I can't imagine him doing much more than he already has.

I was listening to Ryan Whitney, who played with a young Petry in Edmonton.

He mentioned that he knew Petry was going to be good just watching him on the ice back then, but even he didn't think he was going to be what he has become.

It's what you love to see, players maximizing on their ability.

Oof. Gotta read the posts. Petry is giving credit to Markov for showing him parts of the game.

He's not and I'm not claiming Petry is better than Markov was. That's a argument you just invented in your head.

Right, I misread that title lmao, I read it as if he was taking Markovs mantle or whatever, I was probably asleep by then.

But like the majority, completely non existent tonight

I think he had a good game once again tonight. Poor man just had to be carrying Edmundson's useless ass most of the night. He's playing with some amazing confidence right now and is absolutely flying all over the ice. Hope he keeps it up because there is no other D on this team who can do what he does.

He didn't. He's been excellent for most of the games this year but tonight wasn't one of them. He, like others, will bounce back. Tough game against the Grease tomorrow, he'll need to be ready to shut McDavid down.

Do people finally acknowledge that he's better than man-mountain now?

Going to the first few pages of the thread is rough
