Jaromir Jagr to finish 35 games short of all-time record

I hope so too. Sucks his time in Calgary had to end the way it did. But I think he's had more of an impact than people think, albeit off the ice.

Tkachuk's puck control has clearly been influenced by Jagr. The one handed cut into the middle from the outside looks like a mirror of Jagr's.

It has worked wonders, he gets so many shots and drawn penalties with it.

I hope the League gives him a nice farewell. He deserves it. Definitely in the Top 15 of all time, possibly Top 10.

Possibly top 10? He's arguably top 20.

What entitlement does he have that he just deserves something? It's questionable if any team even retires his number.

Not a big Jagr fan either. He got on my nerves his last couple years as a Penguin, but I don't hold any ill will towards him.

Would have been cool to see him hit 2k, as I believe only Gretzky ever broke that barrier.

I think he had something like 17 NHL seasons in a row with 30+ goals. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

I count 15 seasons, but it's still impressive.

Was he that bad in Calgary? Admittedly, I didn't see a single game of his as a Flame, so I'm genuinely curious.

He had a good runs of games, but he kept getting injured. It seemed after every injury, he was slower and slower. The Flames really don't have the roster space for him. It wouldn't be fair to deny any of the kids playing time. It wouldn't be fair to vets either. Moving guys like Stajan, Brouwer, etc..to the AHL to make room for Jagr would effectively end their careers.

He's been relegated to PowerPlay specialist. He's too slow to engage in the 5 on 5 game, sit him in a scoring spot and he still has a decent shot... Let him control the puck and he can still protect it pretty well and win a few battles, but overall, he's just not an incredibly useful player anymore.

Unless Jagr just absolutely wanted out of the NHL and didn't care about trying to set the record, I'm a bit surprised that a team like the Coyotes or Panthers again or Senators or even the Hurricanes didn't try to claim him. Their seasons are all but over already, though Carolina is still hanging on by a thread, and they could all use a boost in attendance, so you'd think it'd be a no harm revenue making decision for them, especially if they were home for Jagr's record setting game.

Small aside, what happened to Brouwer? He was such a beast for the Blues a couple years ago. That sucks.

I don't think Brouwer has been as bad as people are stating. In St. Louis he was a 40 point player. He's now a 25-30 point player, but gets far less ice time. Brouwer is also 32 now, which is the age that players like him tend to decline.

Calgary's main issue with Brouwer is his salary is out of line for his production. Brouwer earns 4.5 mil/year. If he was making 2.5, he wouldn't be the whipping boy anymore. Brouwer takes a lot of heat in Calgary, as he's our only really bad contract. Even then, at 2 more years and 4.5 million/year it's hardly the worst contract in the league.

I really want to see him beat both the GP record and finish with 2k points but it really was his fault for seemingly just getting fat this past summer.

I guess I should have clarified a bit more. Brouw was OK in the regular season (like you said 40pt player) but he just had another level in the playoffs that nobody saw coming. I am guessing that's why he got that huge contract.

Thanks for sharing your point of view!

Really sad to see him go, but I think even he has to know it's time. Nothing else to prove to anyone, get out while you can with a hell of a career and future HOF.

Are you happy he won’t break the record? Or do you believe “records are meant to be broken” and would have enjoyed seeing him make history?

I am happy because I’m just not a big Jagr “fan” myself so I am happy that Gordie will continue to hold the record.
What makes you think he has announced his retirement?

Rangers should start the rebuild today and get Jagr just because he's earned it. But don't grab him if they're not immediately rebuilding, please...
