Which was better?

Jagr's all-around offense was superior, but Ovechkin's goal scoring was better, he was more physical and had a better cumulative plus/minus.

Jagr:

Won the Art Ross in 1999, 2000 and 2001
Won the Hart in 1999 (second in voting in 2000, third in voting in 2001)
Won the Pearson in 1999 and 2000
Top five in goals every year from 1999 to 2001

Ovechkin:

Won the Art Ross in 2008 (second in points in 2009 and 2010)
Won the Rocket Richard in 2008 and 2009
Won the Pearson in 2008, 2009 and 2010
Won the Hart in 2008 and 2009 (second in Hart voting in 2010)

Tough question. I do feel Ovechkin was slightly more dominant on the ice, but it is nearly too close to call.

Peak Ovechkin from 2007-2010 is TOP 5 players of all time for me, yes yes top 5. The perfect hockey player for me. Jagr was insane himself but physicality of Ovi during those years won me over.

Ovechkin was more electrifying but Jagr was more statistically dominant over his peers by a comftorable margin.

Let me know when Jagr did that.

Also, they finished close enough in pts and PPG but not in goals and GPG. Ovechkin also had the better hart record. Jagr produced more pts vs his peers, but his main challengers those 3 seasons were Selanne/Kariya, Bure/Recchi and Sakic/Elias. Other than Sakic, none of those guys are as good as the Malkin and Crosby OV had to compete with.

OV--Jagr

Pts: 1,2,2 vs 1,1,1
PPG: 1,1,1 vs 1,1,2
Goals: 1,1,3 vs 2,3,4
GPG: 1,1,1 vs 2,4,5
Hart: 1,1,2 vs 1,2,3

Ovechkin, but it's close.

Jagr was so good between 98-01. I take him over anyone in the league right nows best three years. Ovi probably comes closest to him but he’s still behind.!

The '99 Pens lost to the Leafs in round round two and the 2000 Penguins lost to the Flyers in the second round.

The Pens weren't nearly as stacked & talented as those Caps teams. I didn't mention the fact that they made it to the conference finale in 01.

The 99 Pens had absolutely no business beating NJ. But Jagr was a big factor in assuring they pulled the upset.

The Caps from 07-08 to 09-10 lost three consecutive game 7's on home ice. They only made it out of the first round once ( 2009).

Jagr won the art toss by 11, 20, 2 (missed about 15-20 games), 3 points (him and sakic were miles beyond 3rd place) in the 4 years from 97/98-00/01. Voters didn't really like jagr back then so he didn't have the hart's that he maybe should have gotten for just how amazing he was in his prime. Offensively jagr had no peers in his prime while ovechkin had Crosby and malkin as equals.

Ovechkin may not have the playoff success. Either does jäger. But I feel ovechkin at least gives more of a damn then a sulky jagr

Small but clear edge to Jagr for me, particularly 1999 and 2000 Jagr as I am not nearly as impressed with Jagr in 2001. Jagr was pounding (relatively) healthy versions of Selanne, Kariya, Forsberg, Sakic etc. in scoring at his best. The Penguins played a more offensive style than most other teams, but those were some weak teams Jagr played on.

Jagr was more ahead of his peers than Ovechkin was.

He was stupidly dominant. Ovechkin was also dominant, just not to the extent of Jagr.

Jagr was good for an extra 10 points or so per season if they played in the same season. He also was in on 45% of his team's offence vs. OV's 40% (in eight less games played).
