For an expansion team with no farm, extra 7th round picks are more valuable.

More picks = more prospects = more competition within the farm which is only a good thing.

Even a late 7th is good because it means they are guaranteed to get a prospect they are targeting. After the draft, they'd have to compete with 31 other teams for any players that might still be of interest.

Another thing is that they can always be used as trade-chips and throw-ins similar to what happened in the trade with Calgary. Stock up on them and use that late pick as an incentive to get better value
