The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday signed right wing Jared Staal to a one-year, two-way contract. According to the team's website, the deal will pay the youngest of the four Staal brothers $550,000 if he plays in the NHL and $60,000 if he's in the American Hockey League during the 2013-14 season.

Staal, 22, appeared in two games with the Hurricanes during the 2012-13 season. In 52 games with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, he established career-highs with four goals, three assists, seven points and 25 penalty minutes.

Judging on how he played in those two games, I got no problem with him on the fourth line. He's a guy who knows his role and sticks to his game and that's not something we've had a lot of the last few years on the fourth line.

JStaal2 is a slow, lumbering skater, but he knows how to use that big body when he gets to the correct end of the ice. If he can improve his skating a bit, I think he'll be a serviceable 4th liner.

I also wouldn't mind Jared becoming a 4th liner in the future, but he still has to work on his strength and skating before he earns any type of full time job in the NHL. He's just too slow right now and isn't that strong for his size. The window to improve on that is closing very fast though.
