First off, happy new year to you all!

I think January is a huge month. 11 games:

1/2/15 - Islanders @ Flames
1/7/15 - Red Wings @ Flames
1/9/15 - Panthers @ Flames
1/10/15 - Flames @ Canucks
1/15/15 - Flames @ Coyotes
1/17/15 - Flames @ Sharks
1/19/15 - Flames @ Kings
1/21/15 - Flames @ Ducks
1/27/15 - Sabres @ Flames
1/29/15 - Wild @ Flames
1/31/15 - Oilers @ Flames

Thoughts on this schedule?

I think it's pretty brutal for the Flames. After the Isles game, we wait 5 days to play our next game and then Vancouver the next night to start our 5 game road trip. We do however have to wait another 5 days to our 2nd road game. One more huge break, we wait 6 days for the Flames to come back from California and go back on a home stand against Buffalo. I do not like these long breaks, though the break from the 21st to the 27th is understandable because that is the All Star break.

Other than the trip to California, the rest are very winnable games.

I'm hoping for at least a win or two on the California teams cause I'll be at these ones! Too bad they play the Coyotes before California and not after, because I'll be ending my trip in Phoenix and would have attended a game there too.

Series-wise

We have a great start here and while these will be tough games I think we can take at least 4 more points playing at home.

1/2/15 - Islanders @ Flames
1/7/15 - Red Wings @ Flames
1/9/15 - Panthers @ Flames

This stretch seems like the most difficult 5 games on the road and starting with our only back-to-back. We'll need to beat the Coyotes and steal 1 vs the Sharks or Kings here if we are going to win 4.
1/10/15 - Flames @ Canucks
1/15/15 - Flames @ Coyotes
1/17/15 - Flames @ Sharks
1/19/15 - Flames @ Kings
1/21/15 - Flames @ Ducks
1/27/15 - Sabres @ Flames
1/29/15 - Wild @ Flames

I can see us winning 4 or 5 of these games as well.
1/31/15 - Oilers @ Flames
2/02/15 - Jets @ Flames
2/04/15 - Sharks @ Flames
2/06/15 - Pens @ Flames
2/09/15 - Flames @ Sharks
2/12/15 - Flames @ Kings
2/14/15 - Canucks @ Flames

14 wins in 21 games would be great to get us back in the playoff race after that losing streak and I don't think that is overly optimistic, as long as Hartley gets the team back on winning at least 4/7.

I think it's a pretty favourable schedule really, no games are easy. At the end of this month our outcome for this season should be much clearer.

It just bothers me that they will have to wait for 5 days to play a game. Sometimes that can take away momentum.

They're professional athletes in a hard-working, team-first environment who have also played more games than most of the league.
I think they won't lose momentum but rather appreciate the time to rest and regroup and I have faith the coaching staff will prepare them accordingly.

After the game on NYE I am willing to bet that the Flames will have a .500 or better January and that they WILL make the playoffs this season, albeit not seeded highly.

Out of the Cali teams, Ducks are the only ones that scare me. For the life of the team they cant win at the Honda center.. other than that, Oilers and Vancouver should be priority on must wins.

I for one am quite happy with the lightness of our schedule in the upcoming month. We've been playing more games than anyone up to this point, and during the losing streak we really started seeing signs of fatigue. I'm optimistic that if we aren't playing games every other day for so long, we might be able to see the level of effort we win with sustained again without faltering.
