So many people were scapegoating Rutta last year like he was Sustr or Carle.

I still think he was genuinely bad last year. Not Carle or Sustr level, but bad enough that we had better options. I wonder if maybe somebody in management knew he would fit with the system after he got accustomed to it? Because it's pretty shocking how he hasn't just "not been bad." He's been actually good.

Also, apparently Slater Koekkoek is starting to turn it around a bit in Chicago. Well, he's finally looking like a regular, anyway. I hope he does well. Seemed like a good kid who got really, really unlucky in his development.

Not every move is based on some extraordinary foresight, Ruuta was signed for cheap defensive depth because we needed it and he was already here - it was a convenience signing that just panned out very well. He's always been a pretty good skater which might have made him an target in the initial trade based on fit.
