Winston is a very flawed QB obviously, but I can see him sticking around the league in a backup spot for a long time if he doesn't get another chance to start. And he's landing in one of the best spots possible, IMO.

Hill barely ever gets to throw the ball and they've brought in Bridgewater and now Winston since he's been there. It seems like they don't trust him to be anything more than a gadget player. Which makes sense because even in college he wasn't a good passer.

Probably a smart move for both sides. Winston wasn't getting a starting job so might as well go sit and learn from Payton and Brees for a year and possibly take over after that. Despite all of the "next Steve Young" hype, it seems the Saints also know Hill is just a gadget guy and not a QB so you need some insurance for Brees.

Hill just got a 2yr $21 mil extension ($16 m guaranteed), seems like a large investment for a gadget guy

Thats probably where he's better suited. All the talk of him being the starter after Brees retires is nonsense. He's a terrible passer.
All the times he's been on the field, he's thrown 15 passes, ever. If you're going to be a quarterback though, eventually you have to be a quarterback, which means you can't be doing kickoff coverage and running routes in practice. And they will give him that chance in camp this year, Brees hardly plays in pre-season. Credit to him though that he's one of these package specialists who managed to stick.

Career Passing Stats:

Mohamed Sanu:
7 completions on 8 attempts
233 yards, 4 TDs
158.3 QB rating

Taysom Hill:
6 completions on 13 attempts
119 yards, 0 TDs, 1 Int
46.6 QB rating

These gimmick plays are designed to be easy completions too. Just look at his long pass against the Vikings in the playoffs where he had an easy TD but he under threw it. Its was still a completion because the WR was so wide open. He put some poor numbers at BYU in his final season even though the schedule was easy. He's almost 30 so I dont see how he's going to be developed into an quality starter.

He's useful player in small doses, kind of like a lesser version of Tebow if he was asked to play a different position.

I think Payton is starting to lose it. What a waste of money on a pretty insignificant player.

If he would’ve been more utilized against the Vikings, we would’ve won that game. He was a one man wrecking crew but got limited touches.

He is a gimmick guy but he’s the last thing from being insignificant.

I’d say a greater version of Tebow. Hill has been willing to do things to stay in the league whereas Tebow wasn’t.

Indeed. Pretty significant investment for a gadget guy.

Talked up Hill all last offseason too and then they re-signed Teddy. Brees gets injured and they start Teddy. Teddy leaves and they sign Winston.
If they are going to use Hill the way they have in all various situations, then they probably want to make sure they have another guy on the roster. Just a matter of how much money NO can spend on their QB rotation with Brees, Hill, and Winston.

He signed for the prospect that Brees gets injured?

Brees did get hurt last year and is not getting any younger. He's been very durable, but theres also the chance they sit him near the end if they are having another great season.

Learning from Payton/Brees was probably a big factor too.

I saw a tweet that said Winston has completed more passes to Saints players than Hill. The number was like 10 vs. 7 or something like that.

Taysom Hill is doing what Tebow should have done. And Tebow would have probably been better at it. But he was dead set on being a QB only. And Josh McDaniels taking him in RD1 like an idiot, probably only validated that mindset.

Jameis Winston the football equivalent of someone who has been given a dozen speeding tickets and is completely and utterly mind blown when he is pulled over again. He looks the officer dead in the eye and says "You're kidding me REALLY??" in disbelief when the cop says he was doing 87 mph in a 55. And then he just sits there staring at his 13th ticket with as much genuine surprise as his 9th (when he should've learned his lesson long ago) and all he has to say for himself is "When I'm not speeding I'm a safe driver. I've never even been in an accident!" (see: "Look at the stats. I'm ballin. If I learn how to cut down the turnovers I'm gonna be the best.") The most damning statistic of his career is one we will never see: there's been at least 20 other dropped INT's in his career no different than all the times a habitual speeding offender isn't pulled over. Christ 88 INT's is just what the defenders have actually caught. This doesn't even count the total instances of his mistakes.

Sean Payton is in for one rude damn awakening if he's hoping to unlock some sort of hidden potential in Winston that Smith, Koetter, Arians, Leftwich and Monken couldn't. Winston starts every season like he's the second coming of rookie year Vinny Testaverde. But then once November/December rolls around and the Bucs are so far out the playoff race it's impossible to catch up, he turns into the second coming of Brett Favre in his prime for the last 5 or 6 weeks of the season and puts up the most ridiculous damn numbers you've ever seen. And suddenly "ZOMG THE LIGHT IS COMING ON FOR HIMB!" and we finish 5-11. I was done with him the second I watched Ryan freaking Fitzpatrick come off the bench and throw to DeSean Jackson in perfect stride -something Winston couldn't figure out how to do in 2 years. He thusly responded to Fitz falling off a cliff like he always does and his suspension with 6 TD's (4 coming in the same game) and 10 INT's in his first 4 games back with us and promptly getting benched for Fitzpatrick again.

All said, the Saints better hope and pray Winston doesn't have to play in any more than like 3 games. He might even win them all and play tremendously. But he completely plateaued somewhere around his 2nd and 3rd season in terms of development and sharply regressed since. You ain't getting 16 weeks of Jameis at his best no matter how bad you wish for it.
