Wow. those are big changes from one player. Not sure how much other plyers were a factor but that is a nice sign.

Muzzin-Zaitsev is a legit good second pairing. I dont have the advance stats to back me up but Zaitsevs plays as a whole in 2019 has been better and he has looked great on a pairing with muzzin.

This is the exact same things that were said when Gardiner and Zaitsev were first paired together.

Muzzin: 22gms, 20:00, 15gl/52pt pace, +5, 51.5cf%, 52.1scf%

still not near enough ice time overall, but at least he's finally gettting more minutes since gardiner and dermott went down:

Last 10gms: 21:24, 25gl/74pt pace, 50.4cf%, 54.9scf%

Still should be playing even more, though.

I love that Muzzin has that bomb from the point. Now and then you gotta just fire it hard and it'll bounce off something and go in, but firing it hard and hitting then net isn't always the easiest thing to do and Muzz is getting it on net.

Leafs PP that was so successful last year was built around getting pucks on net for tips and rebounds.

JVR showed us last night what made him so effective. Great around the net and elite deflection ability that is almost unstoppable.

Tavares brings some of that to the table for sure and I think the underperforming PP is going to heat up again. (Crazy how its considered very underperforming and still 7th in the league.)

Yup JVR was a big part of it for sure.

JT doesnt seem to get used as a rebound/deflection option on the PP as much as I would like. Instead so many cross seam pass attempts.

That being said when the leafs PP gets hot they score in bunches

He even managed to make Zaitsev look decent for a while before his performance dipped again.

I'd certainly expect him to play/average more minutes in the playoffs than Polak did last year. Therefore, even though the rest of the expected (assuming full health) blueline is the same from then, the roles and overall look should be different.

It is great to have a player on the back end that can shoot the puck hard! We need RH version of Muzzin, and then our defense is set!

Zaitsev is isn't good. If you actually watch the games, you'll realize that if he's a turnover machine statistically like a lot of impact defensemen, it's because he's easily pressured to make hasty decisions with the puck and not because he's always involved in the play trying to make calculated, excellent plays than benefit the team.

One such Zaitsev flaw is his puck retrieval. When the opposition forecheck has him turning around to go get the puck, there's a pretty good chance he's not going to grab the puck cleanly and turn around and head up the ice crispy. Or he'll rifle the puck to nowhere and not take the extra 1 second to assess where his teammates are. And he's very light on his feet. As in not sturdy. Just a mess against the cycle.

Muzzin is an upgrade on Gardiner defensively. No question. He has helped stabilize Zaitsev.

Jake is really a third pairing guy at even strength.

both Jakes are most appropriately labelled good #2 dmen.
