Speculation: Jake Gardiner hasn't had a shot on net this season.

What the heck is going on with this guy?

Has something carried over from Game 7?

He has been off base, off putting, and off line.

If he is a team player, then he better get his head straight. If he's not, then he has to stop committing career suicide. He is an UFA next season and you would hope that he cares about getting paid.

I am sorry but I'll always be a Jake Gardiner detractor. I will not hide my position about him or get accused of trolling.

He needs to be a lot better...

His role is being pushed to the side quite a bit. It's obvious the Leafs will be moving on from Jake.

He’s trying to keep his value down and sign a team friendly long term deal

Jake only had 15 games all of last year where he didn't get a SOG, and only two consecutively.

I don't know if game 7 f***ed with his head or if it was his marriage.

Some players are off to great starts, some players are off to sluggish starts. When the players on a roll level off a bit, hopefully the others will rebound to pick up the slack.

At the moment, there are 27 players without a shot on net, including 13 forwards.

Players without a shot on net include Kassian, Method, Del Zotto, Stralman, Ryan, and Phaneuf.

He has been playing as well (or, if you prefer, as badly) as usual. He has two assists, and is eighth on the team in +/-.

I think the team has bigger problems. For example, they are being outscored 5-on-5, and Kadri has been on for half (9 of 18) of the even strength goals allowed, with Matthews and Marleau right behind with 8 each. Gardiner has only been on for five.

He was also a joke last year until around january. He just simply doesn't care. Than he starts playing hockey, which still doesn't mean he won't make mistakes, he just reducing the 5 brainless plays/game to 2.

He's got Phaneufitis.

I know it was a long time ago but Phaneuf was one of the best Dmen in the league for a little while.
Phaneuf had a reputation, not actually supported by the facts, of not being able to hit a barn from inside. His actual on target % was marginally below average for a defenceman. It was his defensive game that was bad.

That reminds me of a story Dennis Hull told. People used to say that his brother Bobby could shoot a puck so fast that it would go through a carwash without getting wet. Dennis said his shot was harder, but he couldn't hit the carwash.

shooting isn't his job , he's been real solid at doing his job of stopping the other team from scoring . He's only been on for 2 goals , The superstar has been on for 9 of the oppositions 19 goals .

We have enough offence going on that I’m not too concerned. I’d rather he focuses on eliminating his gaffs in the D zone rather than his SOG count

I don't think we should be overly concerned about a slow start offensively for Gardiner any more than we should be expecting Matthews to score 150 goals this season. It's a small sample size right now and not everyone can get off to a spectacular start, or we would be winning each game 15-1.

The reduced role on the PP is likely a factor.

I'm more concerned that we still see some of the major defensive gaffes that are a part of his game.

Guy has a 1 month old baby. Let's cut him some slack before ripping his head off 5 games into the season.

Has he been bad? Yes. Does it matter at the moment? No.

It's fairly obvious Travis Dermott is the #2LD for this team moving forward.

That said, this team is stronger with Jake Gardiner on it, than off of it, despite the slow start to the season. I think this cools the talk from people that he is going to get 6M+

I hope we can keep him on a 4-6 year deal around 4.5-5.5M

We can always trade him down the line when needed, but as of this moment, we don't have the strength on defense to let him go.

Now, perhaps our defense strengthens before we end up resigning him and we can let him walk. Perhaps Rasmus Sandin, whereever he plays this year, continues the play we saw from him in the pre-season, and becomes a strong option for next season. Perhaps a trade is made to strengthen our defense.

As of now, I think we have 3/4's of a strong top 4 for next season, in Morgan Rielly, Travis Dermott and Nikita Zaitsev [who has looked much better while starting in the Leafs zone for nearly 65% of his shifts]. Whether Jake Gardiner is that 4th guy with Dermott being on the right side, or it's someone else, is a lot of what this season will be about I think.
