This guy is not worth eight million in cap space per year until 2026. What a terrible contract

#1 or #2 RD get paid in this league. We haven't had a genuine top-pairing RD in a long, long time. As much as I liked Girardi when he was on his game, he also benefited highly from playing with a good partner. There's also been a few articles that suggest Trouba makes life easier on the pairings behind him. That's valuable.

Seeing where the money may have gone, I'm much more comfortable with an $8 million Trouba than a $7 million Hayes. With cap going up, it'll be a lower percentage of the cap anyhow.

Without Trouba, we'd have Fox, DeAngelo, and Pionk. Offense, to be sure, but not so much defensively, especially when combined with what's there on the left side.

I do think we have bungled the defense over the years, but acquiring Trouba is not one of those, in my opinion.

It's too soon to call Trouba a bad contract. He has been up and down sure. But with Ruff still coordinating defense, I still give him the benefit of the doubt. They have their two QB PP specialists in DeAngelo and Fox, So Trouba needs to be in that more shutdown role.

I'm not really sure what's happened to Skjei over these last 30 games, but he's having the absolute worst stretch of his career. He and Trouba just simply do not work together since they're both more offensively-inclined defenders that are subpar at defending. They need to go back to Lindgren-Trouba and Skjei-Fox since they're much more balanced as pairings. Never having to watch Staal-Smith again would be a nice bonus too.

The issue is that they have two guys at LD who do not work – Staal, who is no better than a 7D at this point, and Skjei who has regressed from his rookie campaign, and should really be playing on a 2nd pair with a fully stay-at-home RD in the mold of Kevin Klein. Meanwhile, Lindgren, while a good longterm piece, does not belong on a top pair.

Trade Skjei. Buy out Staal. Acquire a solid LD via trade/2-3 year contract in UFA, see what you've got in the kids over the next 1-2 years. Add/subtract as necessary.

I was never a huge fan of Trouba like many were. The trade was ok but this contract is a disaster. I just haven’t been that impressed with him considering what we are paying him. His best game might have been against Winnipeg but too many mistakes for my liking

I just said this in the Frustration thread. It puts all of our saltiness on one pairing, but I don't see any other options at the moment.

Both of those pairings have pretty solid on-ice results too, so I'd like to see them in more of a sample size. Quinn's used them recently, but then he's switched right back to his original pairings after like 5 minutes.

The 3rd pairing is pretty hopeless until we get Tony another partner.

Imagine Tony’s production & analytics if he wasn’t playing with Staal

I was never a fan of Trouba although a ton of Ranger fans wanted him for years. We’ll be careful what you wish for lol

He's had a rough year...defenseman can have that happen their first year in a new system after getting Megabucks. I wouldn't trade him, unless someone knocks our socks off.

About JT Miller, No. Although he was a Bozo of sorts with his blind passing, yet still a good player even with that Bozo trait.

Trouba my views align more closely with yours.
As someone who lives in Vancouver and sees a lot of Miller he’s essentially the exact same thing as Ryan Strome. He’s piggybacking off of playing on a line with one of the best players in the league, and still making frequent bonehead decisions & taking dumb offensive zone penalties. My critiques of him were never based on offensive production keep in mind (except in playoffs), every critique I’ve made about him is still just as relevant as it was when I coined the name Bozo.

But yea with DeAngelo, Fox & Lundkvist that Trouba contract is just a disaster in so many ways. Even if he was living up to that contract I think it would be the wrong move for this team. But when he’s looking this bad in the very first year, yikes.

One of my friend’s is a Jets fan and he was very happy to see Trouba go. Between holding out and having games where he looks bad he said fans got sick of it. Obviously he had talent and can still be productive but that contract is an albatross
