I guess we'll see, but I doubt the Rangers traded for him without a contract extension in mind.

Sure, but it takes two parties to sign an extension, no matter how much the Rangers had an extension in mind. The Jets wanted to extend him too. Very good chance he does extend in NY, I just don't think it's a 100% given, and I think it's fairly likely he plays his last RFA year before signing the extension.

That's just silly to use as an excuse. If he doesn't, can we come back and say 'omg he blew it!'. Who they drafted is irrelevant, it's the overall return, not what a pick turns into. If we traded for a top 3 pick and the pick bombs, do we come back and 'say man we got hosed!'? No, you base it on what it is. The Jets got hosed and anyone trying to defend it is a homer.

Wasn't there execs that flat out said there were better deals than the Rangers offer? Didn't the Pens have a better offer? Is Chevy too nice he just wanted to make Trouba happy and send him where he wanted to go? Jets got hosed, period. Anyone saying otherwise is a blind Jets fan.
an HF Jets poster reached out to the author of the Pens article to question the article about the superior offer - the Pens allegedly had a better deal in place, but the deal was contingent on not going through arbitration and having a long-term agreement in place with Pittsburgh/Trouba. They weren't going to do the deal w/o a long-term agreement and Chevy wanted to deal Trouba this off-season, so no "own-rental" scenario

What did you expect Chevy to do once Overcharge poisoned the well with other GMs? Once KO informed Chevy that Trouba wouldn't sign with any other teams other than the Rangers his hands were tied, as no GM is going to move valuable assets for a player that doesn't want to be there going straight into the arbitration process on a 1 year path to UFA status. KO cleared the field for the Rangers and Chevy was forced to get the best deal he could or hold on to Trouba as an own rental. Getting a top 20 pick and a bit of an unknown in Pionk was what was left after other offers dried up. Or do you believe Chevy purposely turned down better offers for an inferior offer?

Penguins were not alone in making a superior offer for Trouba than the Rangers & More Buzz

Chevy could have let Trouba negotiate with the Rangers.

Im kind of confused about what you're trying to say. The Pens wanted a long-term extension before trading for him, but was it Chevy or Trouba that declined that?

Pens had a better offer (allegedly) but the Pens didn't want him on an Arbitration awarded deal, they wanted a long-term deal to come with Trouba (think along the lines of Mark Stone's trade at the TDL). The deal was contingent on a long-term extension coming with Trouba. I think Chevy knew KO/Trouba's intentions that they were looking for at a couple teams in the NY area. If he let KO talk to other teams that'd probably kill his trade value on the spot, since Trouba's camp only had NY area in mind.

this is all according to the author of that Pens article saying they had a better offer

What you state is all true but with New York being the only team he was going to sign with long-term, any other team acquiring him wasn’t going to take him to arbitration when they were going to have such a small window to sell him to stay long-term. I know for a fact Pittsburgh was not going to go that route if they acquired him.

This chart includes data from all defensemen who played at least 40 games and had a cap hit of at least $1,000,000 in the 2018-2019 season.

I don't know what you think that says.

The vast majority of D aren't over 10 goals and aren't over 5M in salary.

However, at 7M, there are just as many <10 goal D as above. At 6M there are more <10 than >10.

This is backing up the "goal scoring is irrelevant for how defensemen are paid" argument.

That's what he has been doing for more than a month and how much closer to a deal is he? If Chevy wanted back into the 1st round he couldn't wait on KO's negotiation tactics.

Arguably he could have waited til the deadline and moved him then, but then Laine or Connor might be on a different team instead.

It was almost 2 months from the end of the Jets season to when Trouba got traded. And even if they didn't yet come to an agreement, if the Rangers knew for sure that he was looking to sign long-term, they might have given up more.

There was literally no reason to not allow the Rangers to speak with him other than pettiness.

Unless the Jets knew he wouldn't agree to a contract with the new team prior to being traded, thus bringing down his trade value even further. That may have been the case actually -- considering it's been like a month since he was traded and still no long term extension with NY, it appears Trouba is in no hurry to agree to that long term extension.

I don't doubt he will probably end up signing long term, but if he hasn't signed with them in a month, odds are he wasn't going to agree to the extension prior to the trade happening - and the Jets likely knew that and didn't want other teams to know.

Another potential reason, if Trouba let the Jets know he only wanted to play for NY long term, it's likely the Jets didn't want other teams to know that. Why let the Penguins talk to Trouba and know he doesn't want to stay with them long term? Why let the Rangers hear from Trouba's mouth that he ONLY wants to play for them....that would decrease his trade value even further because now NY knows they are literally competing against no one else for his services.

@Will W. Here we go! I knew this would be one of the first questions. IMO, Trouba signing will happen shortly before the arbitration date July 25. They're negotiating over a few hundred G and bonus breakdowns. I think it gets done. And I think Kreider is much, much more likely to be traded than extended.

Beyond that, let's look at the evidence. There have been reports that Trouba only wanted to go to New York. We know from Trouba himself that finding a situation that is beneficial to both himself and his fiancee is important to him, and the primary reason why he didn't want to stay in Winnipeg.

There's also the fact that the Rangers are trying to trade players to clear cap. Having a definitive cap number for Trouba could hurt Gorton's negotiating leverage. And once both Trouba and Buchnevich are signed, the 2nd buyout window will open 3 days later. It's in Gorton's best interest to wait until the last minute to sign both players.

The contract will get done before the arbitration hearing.

You didn't need him to agree to an extension prior to the trade to increase his trade value. All you needed was the understanding that his intention would be to sign with the Rangers long-term.

That it was only the Rangers wouldn't have decreased his trade value. The idea that "only wanting to play for one team decreases trade value" has been disproven by real trades over and over.

Maybe to all the above but why would Chevy hold off moving Trouba for the Rangers to get all their ducks in a row? Would the return been that much better?

Chevy kept Trouba from talking to any team. Nothing sinks a team's interest more than being told a player won't sign with you. KO made sure anyways through Chevy that Trouba would only sign with the Rangers. Why then would Chevy wait until mid summer waiting for the Rangers to make a deal. I'm still sceptical it doesn't actually go to arbitration.

I'm not arguing the return. I was just addressing your first sentence.

Sure, and Trouba and his agent would have jerked the Rangers around to the point that they might have walked away.

Chevy wanted back into the 1st round of the 2019 draft and had limited options because of Trouba's limitations on markets he would consider signing in long term, so Chevy cut his losses and went with a deal that gave him back his 1st. Nothing ideal about it, but Trouba and his agent tied everyone's hands on this.
