A model of durability and efficiency, Wilbur Wood proved throughout his career that he can pitch in any situation: starting, long relief, closing, etc. From 1971 to 1974, he pitched over 300 innings in consecutive seasons, reaching 376.2 innings in 1972. For our purposes, he will serve as a left handed option for long relief in the bullpen, but if any injury was to occur to a member of our pitching staff, he is well-equipped to assume their duties as well. Early on in his career, he was taught to perfect his knuckleball from the mentorship of his teammate, Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm. He advised Wood to throw the knuckler either "all the time or not at all. It's not an extra pitch." He soon developed a mastery of the pitch and became the most feared knuckleball pitcher in the American League.
