The problem is the players spend as though those contracts will keep on coming. The reality is that money will need to last about 50 years, you're going to see a lot of pro athletes in all different sports go broke in the coming years because the spending heavily outweighs the potential income.

This, my little brother terrifies me the way he throws away the money he makes and he isn't anywhere near an NHL or even AHL star (he's an ECHL/CHL veteran.) Just throws money away thinking that teams will pay him forever. Even after he had his other knee operated on last year he still talks about continueing to play with no plan after hockey, and little money remaining from his time playing. He's in for a very rude awakening when he quits playing because he has little money left and basically owns nothing, his housing has always been paid buy the team, he has no clue how expensive rent can be and no money for a downpayment on a home. It's a scary thought if the money suddenly dries up for him.
