Isles pass. Pulock league wide has more value than Nylander. Top pairing RHD are probably the hardest player to obtain when it comes to trades. Liljegren doesn’t counter balance the loss of Pulock plus he’d wind up as a third pairing guy battling with Salo.

Pass, Pulock has been the Islanders beat defensemen so far this season.
Shhh it’s Sebastian Aho actually. Let’s trade him to the Leafs instead. They’ll think they got the forward from Carolina.

Pulock is in year 1 of 8 of his contract. Nylander is in year 5 of 6. No chance they do that

It's a gamble, for sure, although not a major one IMO as long as you're willing to pay up to re-sign him. We've seen how great the Islanders have been at signing top UFAs and developing star wingers from within. I think if you're going to solve the hole on Barzal's wing once and for all, it's probably going to be a situation like this, with either a rental you're banking on staying or a guy who is a couple years away.

He's been good for sure, as has the whole group outside of maybe Aho(but even he's had his moments of looking halfway decent). It's dealing from a strength to solve a weakness. It sucks, but it's worth debating IMO. The alternative is dealing more futures, which is probably the more realistic approach but I'm not necessarily sure it's the right one. Another year without a 1st rounder as the team continues to get older. OTOH you make this move and you should be able to lock up Mayfield, where as of now he's all but a lock to walk. Everyone moves up a pairing in this scenario, including Dobson who's future is next to Pelech, IMO.

Sure but that's the point. You really only need Liljegren to hold down your 3rd pairing if the result of this trade is Dobson moving up to the 1st and Mayfield to the 2nd. Basically if we're moving Pulock you need a body to come back the other way, since we have nothing in the way of NHL-ready RHD depth. We're obviously not getting back a top pairing guy in any Pulock trade, nor are we even likely to get back a top-4. It kinda defeats the purpose of any team even looking to acquire Pulock.

Yeah, i wouldn't do that if i'm the Islanders. Nylander is talented, but a soft scoring winger doesn't get you a top-pair RHD. Especially not with their respective contract situations, with Pulock being locked up for a long time, and Nylander encroaching on UFA territory.

This isn't bad, assuming Isles can keep Nylander.

It's a first liner expiring next year + young RHD with top 4 potential for a top pair RHD. Isles can move Dobson onto the first pair with how well he played last season, and Liljegren can more than adequately fill the hole on the second pair.

This deal doesn’t real help the Islanders though. Even with moving Dobson up, losing Pulock leaves a massive dent in the blue line from the right side. Liljegren being brought in to be an average RHD doesn’t do much except provide a stop gap at the moment. Grant Hutton is also capable of playing that 3RD role but is down in Bridgeport due to roster space. This trade helps out the Leafs from a roster fix (short term and long term) substantially while giving the islanders a soft winger who’s 2 seasons away from UFA. It does more damage for the Islanders then it does help them. Pulock has more trade value then both Liljegren and Nylander combined plus you guys want Wahlstrom too? Nope. Not happening.
